Survey of Andunor, 185 AR, by Treason Wael

Note 0: Intro by Treason Wael

This work is dedicated to Gote Sh'yalva, my comrade in arms, in this life and hopefully the next. May she keep destroying everything in the afterlife.

This is an informal census, and many could find fault in my method of simply noting down whoever I see on the street and assuming they represent a reliable sliver of the total population of Andunor. But such is placing too much reliability on reality to conform to logic. What follows may be wrong, but it may also not be. And it is my belief that any survey is better than no survey at all.

I note here that in this survey I considered half-breeds to be full-breeds (much to my chagrin when it comes to half-drow), as fully investigating the frequently incredible heritages of half-orcs would be an exercise I do not have time for. While I did make some notes as to slave populations, I did not pay special attention to such beyond noting that drow, kobolds, humans, et al are all sometimes slaves in this city of ours. The composition of Andunor's slaves is work for someone else.

Another note: percentages, due to rounding, probably do not sum up to 100% - yet another proof of the unreliability of reality.

The most important chapter in this book is the Andunor one, which will give the most reliable estimate for the composition of Andunor's population, but in the interest of being interesting, and given that it took no additional field work, I have also written up short chapters of the districts and areas of Andunor.

Note 1: Andunor by Treason Wael

The total number of individuals I have noted in Andunor is 474. I have deducted that the population is distributed as follow:

Drow 19%

Humans 19%

Orcs 13%

Goblins 9%

Kobolds 6%

Duergar 11%

Hobgoblins 1%

Ogres 3%

Gnolls 3%

Svirfneblin 2%

Troglodytes 2%

Elves 2%

Rothe 2%

Trolls 1%

Rats 1%

Quaggoth 1%

Kuo-toa 1%

Halflings 1%

Dwarves 1%

The percentages of the various remaining creatures, a category which includes penguins, githzerai and sentient mummies, are negligible and thus are probably not representative of the population of Andunor.

There are no majorities of any race within the city, nor could it be said that there's even a plurality. Drow, as is common in our cities, comprise a minority, but unlike in our cities the remaining races are not generally enslaved. This makes the entire city very peculiar and gives it its special character.

Note 2: Sewers by Treason Wael

The place of wretches who work the worst jobs available without any respite or choice in the matter - in other words, a place of slaves. But in addition to the slaves that work there there are also the poor fools that believe they can escape their lives of drudgery here. As I proved with my whip during this survey, they were right. But, it is these revolting slaves who are presumably representative of the slave population of the city that we usually don't pay much attention to.

The slaves in open revolt of our proud traditions make their home here along with other vermin, such as beetles, rats and oozes. How they manage to keep the oozes mollified is a mystery, and although I have ideas, they are not for these pages. Goblinoids also live on the refuse of the city and take a similarly dim view of their rightful execution, resisting quite vigorously as I "conducted" my survey.

The majority of the sewer population is goblins (52%), followed by the ever-detestable elves (17%), humans (15%), kobolds (7%), halflings (6%), trolls (2%) and hobgoblins (2%). This is, of course, if you do not count beetles, rats and oozes. Which I did not in this area. If I did, they would vastly outnumber the rest.

Note 3: Devil's Table by Treason Wael

A strange district currently held in check by the iron grip of drow who do not realize that our traditions change to fit our environment, instead of being made to fit all cities in all times. But I digress - it is the seat of one of the ruling drow families of Andunor, the Freth, complete with a Temple, library, mansions a-plenty, a bank and a gladiatorial arena where the desperate and strong risk their lives for coin.

Of note is the Freth mansion. Uncharacteristically open about themselves, they allow visitors rummage through their belongings and allow them to ask their members inane questions (and their male wizard certainly was a match for the latter). They seem so fabulously wealthy that they carelessly leave gold inside book piles they leave strewn about their mansion, from which I gathered 100 gold coins during this survey. Which is not a lot, but more than I'm used to finding when rifling through the belongings of others.

The population is as follows: 55% drow (as could be expected), 13% humans, 9% duergar, 8% gold dwarf, 4% gnolls, 4% orcs, 2% kobolds, 2% rothe, 2% ogres, 2% goblins, and either 1% or only one Svirfneblin (their race being so secretive it is difficult to gauge). Devils were not counted.

Note 4: Sharps  by Treason Wael

Most questionable of the districts - even the humans I met seemed to be unsure of whether they were human or not. Not to mention the Claddath drow that ooze out of their armor and although their oozy and macabre gestalts might count as drow (or all races at once?) I treated them similarly to the devils of the Table and ignored their existence.

This is the seat of the other ruling family of this city, the Claddath. And they perfectly represent the personality of this district, a strange one, where borders are fluid and poorly drawn up - much like the borders of an ooze or jelly. The exile caves close to the city gates are of note for the drow exiles that seem to be spitting images of the gondoliers.

The Claddath are a true contrast to the Freth, being very secretive drow, while going through their mansions they stood completely still and wordlessly watched me. Their home is full of gore that they never seem to clean. And despite the Sharps being the more chaotic district, as I left the sickly sweet smell of their mansion, I thought about how quiet it was compared to the Freth mansion.

As a final note, there's a gambling goblin in the basement of the district House who is notable because it seems to run a fairly fair game. I played its game 30 times in total, winning 12 times and losing 18 times, netting me a profit of negative 600 gold.

The population of the Sharps is 29% drow, 18% orc, 12% ogre, 4% goblin, 11% human, 9% troglodyte, 5% kobold, 4% duergar, 4% gnoll, 2% chicken, 1% svirfneblin, 1% rothe, 1% rat.

Note 5: Slums & Slave Pits by Treason Wael

The slums and slave pits are about as good as you can hope for when you're a slave (and haven't yet decided to risk death in the surrounding wilderness or the phantasmagoric wonderland of murder that are the sewers) - while the fighting pit is well known to all, what fascinates me is the criminal underground just out of sight. A group of orogs smuggling things, but what? And why are the pits so intimately connected to the derro city which Claddath trades with but which is formally at war with Andunor?

And why are there kuo-toa in the slums? Perhaps because of the water and high humidity? And who is the blood-reaver who I did not manage to catch in the slums?

The population is as follows: 19% human, 13% goblin, 13% orc, 10% quaggoth, 6% kuo-toa, 6% drow, 6% kobold, 3% ogre, 3% troglodyte, 3% snake person. The various fighters in the arena are obviously singular specimens and thus not representative of the population.

Note 6: Greyport by Treason Wael

Ignoring my personal adventures with rude kobolds who act as if they're drow nobility, redeemed by the seemingly only kobold with any amount of grace - the characteristic of this district is its criminal underbelly. I have found two gangs working openly, who knows how many others exist. One, seemingly human-only, the other, the Bone-Rot Thugs, who hire seemingly anyone.

This district is also the most cosmopolitan of them all, having both sentient undead and githzerai living in it. One marvels at the wondrous nature of its population, that seems such a contrast to the dour duergar who claim ownership of it.

The population is as follows: 26% human, 25% duergar, 10% kobold, 9% drow, 7% orc, 5% rat, 3% gnoll, 2% ogre, 2% rothe, 2% kenku, 2% sentient undead, 1% quaggoth, 1% githzerai, 1% troglodyte, 1% lizard person, 1% giant, 1% kuo-toa, 1% halfling, 1% derro.

Note 7: Hub by Treason Wael

The district that is not one, it is also the most bustling with energy due to all the adventurers seeking to enact their utopian ideals on the world, damned the consequences (I count myself among them). It is also the most chaotic, most likely if I had chosen a different day to do my survey in it, I would have gotten a completely different result. But, again, such is the nature of the world - and any result is better than no result at all.

Ignoring the constant attacks by quaggoth at the main gate of Andunor, the interesting parts of the Hub are obviously the Arcanum, for which I am writing this for, the writ-master's office, around whom life in the city revolves around, and the various bars, observatories, maps, and such. But I don't need to tell you about this place, it is most likely your home.

The population of the Hub was, during my survey, as follows: 24% orc, 20% human, 18% drow, 10% duergar, 5% svirfneblin, 4% kobold, 3% goblin, 3% rothe 2% gnoll, 2% troll, 1% derro, 1% hobgoblin, 1% penguin, 1% bugbear, 1% ogre, 1% some black four-legged furry hissing thing with a tail, 1% beholder, 1% gloaming, 1% minotaur.
