Infiltration & False Flag attacks
People of Arelith,
On the fourteenth day of this month (Eleint), Cordor discovered a cell of traitors which had successfully infiltrated the military. This cell was exploiting the tensions between the cities of Cordor and Guldorand by attacking Guldorandi trade caravans in hopes the blame would fall on Cordor's legitimate government.
In addition to the caravan attacks, two other notable incidents have occurred. An attack by 'Amn' on Brogendenstein's shipping, and the assassination attempt on lord Aldros Rivorndir by men of 'Waterdeep'. While it cannot at this time be proven these incidents are linked to the caravan attacks, a few patterns can be established which apply to all three incidents.
- The governments in whose name the attacks are carried out claim no knowledge or involvement.
- The attacks offer no clear benefit to the nations in whose name they are carried out.
- The attacks exploit pre-existing tensions.
This letter serves as a warning to us all to be very mindful in how we act and react to each other in the coming months. We are being played in an attempt to start a war. Cordor wants peace on our island, and I truly believe the same goes for the vast majority of you.
I have included a brief summary of evidence pertaining the cell in Cordor and its modus operandi. A more detailed full account with reports and documents can be provided by myself on request.
Signed,
Chancellor of Cordor Ginny Rivorndir
The sigil of Cordor is depicted just underneath the beautifully calligraphed signature; A Cordorian Eagle, its wings and claws outstretched.
Summary of evidence and modus operandi:
- A note discovered in the aftermath of one of the caravan attacks pointed to a basement in Cordor's slums.
- The basement was watched on the outside by a paid agent who recorded anyone entering.
- Information was passed from the agent to their handler via prearranged drop points. The active drop point was visited by Cordorian military, and a note discovered pointing to the next drop point, with a timeframe included (1 month).
- After sharing information with us, the agent was killed by his handlers at the first opportunity. Four men in Cordor military uniforms knocked out the guard outside the jail, and killed the agent held within.
- The Chancellor and entourage were ambushed shortly after by a group of 8, mixed Cordor military uniforms and assorted others.
- One of the traitors was taken alive. It was revealed their handler is a hooded individual communicating only through illusionary images.
- The captured traitor was held in Brogendenstein's cells, where two attempts on his life were made. Once with acid through a grate, and once with a group of attackers coming in through the door. When this failed, an illusionary image of a hooded man offered some of our people vast sums of coin to immediately execute the captured traitor.
Regent of Brogendenstein Snorri Wordsmith can corroborate the evidence specifically pertaining to the events within the dominion.
