Case File A.R. 183 - Ssaerth V.3: Ongoing Land War

From Encyclopedia Arelithica 3.0

Cordor v Ssaerth War | Primer, 183 AR v.1

==Description==

Tall and thin drow male, wearing mage's robes of fine make and occasionally a scholar's hat upon the head. Eyes are dark, dead, and soulless appearing.

==Storyline of Events==

Vhuraen Ssaerth, often referred to as simply Ssaerth, is a male drow who has been at war with the surface island of Arelith during the year of 183 AR. He hails from Ched Miz'rena and is the fifth son of the Matron Ssaerth.

There have been a few stated or highly assumed goals of Ssaerth. He desires vengeance upon the Brotherhood of Dawn who acted against Vhuraen's wife, named Miz'rena Ssaerth. Miz'rena is stated to have engaged in raids on the surface in 150 AR and perished during a raid by the Brotherhood of Dawn in 153 AR, her soul placed within a soul gem. Vhuraen Ssaerth has stated his desire to see his wife's soul returned to him.

Vhuraen Ssareth's first appearance was associated with the "Black Wyvern", a colossal Galleon Flagship. It housed wyvern riders who took to the skies during naval combat. A captured from the "Black Wyvern" stated that Vhuraen Ssaerth's wealth came from him taking the remains of his collapsing house and engaged in new research, the "Black Wyvern" being one of such. It is stated that Ssaerth began to target Cordorian vessels to make a name for himself within Andunor, and rumoured to be intended to sell the "Black Wyvern" after proving its worth.

Multiple vessels from Cordor's fleet with additional help from allied vessels tracked and assaulted the "Black Wyvern" over multiple encounters. Admiral Freya Montgomery was given command of the situation and saw the "Black Wyvern" sunk. Vhuraen Ssaerth took this loss and began working on a new project with a secondary ship which was supporting the "Black Wyvern" called the "Observing Spider".

The "Observing Spider" is a standard Brigantine-class vessel which originally supported the "Black Wyvern". After the "Black Wyvern" was sunk, an arcane cannon was installed upon the deck of the "Observing Spider". This cannon shoots a beam of light upwards into the sky which then arcs and lands at great distances, beyond the normal range of traditional naval weaponry. With this cannon, it can attack coastal cities from beyond their naval defenses.

The "Observing Spider" is, at time of writing, still sailing. It has assaulted Cordorian vessels and bombarded Cordor a few times, yet otherwise remains cloistered away.

In Ssaerth's arsenal of tools is what was coined the Portal Network. This system uses a demi-plane to act as a corridor between two portals. The demi-plane is pure black, with no visible floor, walls, ceiling, atmosphere, or anything. Entry and exit portals are opened to this space, then to other locations to move his mercenary army about.

This army of mercenaries includes drow, human, orcbloods, driders, and a few additional races all loyal to Ssaerth due to his wealth. They have conducted assaults of the Arelithian cities and sent as assassins to deal with high value targets.

The Brotherhood of Dawn at a point arrived on Arelith, sailing past Cordor to land in Guldorand, where they took up camp in a valley near the city. The Brotherhood of Dawn is an exiled group of Tyrrans which numbered five hundred strong to combat Ssaerth. Ssaerth accepted this arrival, Ssaerth's Mercenary Army striking in an intense battle with the Brotherhood of Dawn. The Brotherhood of Dawn was assisted by Guldorand and Cordor with addition to several adventurers.

Prior to this battle, it was discovered that the Brotherhood of Dawn possessed the soul gem of Miz'rena Ssaerth upon one of their ships. During the cover of battle, a team of Cordorians saw to board this vessel and steal the soul gem. It was decided that the soul gem would be used to barter with Vhuraen Ssaerth. During those negotiations it was decided to release Miz'rena's soul, however an explosion interrupted the ritual to do so caused by rescued slaves who were carrying unknown explosives.

----------------------

Present Day (At time of writing), Cordor contends with attacks by Ssaerth, with assaults against his own forces in turn. Ssaerth uses his portal network to assault key persons of Cordor, most notibly Vice Chancellor Thomas Castemont. Another tool of Ssaerth is the use of psychological warfare by putting released slaves into the picture or ransoming off captured persons. He additionally has begun to use magic of either enchantment or illusionary nature to haunt and confuse the Cordorian population.

A recent attack found a ritual circle used to sacrifice captured Cordorian civilians to create blood homunculi, which was undone. There is a threat of homunculi who were created prior being used against Cordor. Additionally, a library of Vhuraen Ssaerth was discovered and burned, and it is known he controls at least one island in the nearby seas which hosts a number of this mercenary army.

Due to the planning and actions of the House of Ascension and the Radiant Heart, survivors from the Brotherhood of Dawn were portalled away towards the eastern mainland. The Radiant Heart was assaulted by hundreds of undead during this in an attempt to wipe out the remains of the Brotherhood, raised Brotherhood bodies taken from the battle near Guldorand. This was orchestrated by Vhuraen Ssaerth himself.

  • When*: Approximately day 3 of month 11 (Uktar), 183 AR
  • Where*: Nexus Falls Vicinity

<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>

Chain of Command:

<> Knight Commander Alis-Dionadair Grantz

<> Knight Captain Aerdrick Silverarms

<> Knight Lieutenant Max Storm

<> Sergeant Malcolm Dunsmuir

<> All reserve forces will defer to the above first in situations where it makes sense to do so. If a strategic call must be made in the moment and the above cannot be located, defer to the highest ranking officer of your team.

<> Ritualists report directly to Loremaster Sedaene.

<> Cordor's force will report to their highest ranking officer present.

<> Guldorand's force will report to their highest ranking officer present.

<> All other allies will report directly to the Order's command post.

<> Those who cannot follow orders from the above chain of command should not be present.

Overview:

<> The Order of Ascension will be conducting an extensive and risky ritual to open a portal to Beregost for planar transport of the Brotherhood of Dawn to a secure location outside of Ssaerth?s grasp and into the hands of those who can deliver them unto True Justice.

Objectives:

<> Defend the ritualists from interruption at all cost.

<> See the Brotherhood regiment safely through the opened portal to the mainland.

<> In the event of an enemy breach of the area, hold a defensive position at all costs.

Terrain Assessment:

<> The key features of the natural terrain include hills, trees, and waterfalls that could be used to both tactical and enemy advantage.

<> There are areas that provide natural landscape concealment and optimal defensive positions such as the bodies of water and ledges.

Risk Assessment:

<> Ssaerth's forces might be loosed in a siege on the ritualists to stop it from happening. Historical data shows that this could be in drow assassins, drider or orog mercenaries, shadow creatures, blood constructs, shadow wyrms, or dracoliches.

<> There is an active presence of Andunorian raiders in this region during nighttime hours.

<> The Church of Bane in the Minmir region could pose a threat if they decide on aggression.

<> If the ritual fails or the ritualists break concentration at any time, then the elements will likely combust in a wide range around the ritual site. All in close proximity will face risk of immediate incineration.

Force Deployment:

<> The Order of Ascension will be the main defense on the frontline. They will offer immediate ground support to the ritualists in a perimeter around the ritual space.

<> Cordor, Guldorand, and other allies will comprise the reserve and observation forces. They will take flanking and periphery positions where it is determined support is most needed. Some scouts will be employed to various locations to monitor.

Engagement Strategies:

<> Should a threat come to interrupt the ritual, all defenders should be ready to engage as quickly as the enemies approach. Concentrate fire on key enemy units such as warded mages, clerics, or elite martial fighters. Utilize casters to create choke points as available.

<> Engage until it is impossible to hold position. If the main force begins to waver, the reserve force should immediately fall in to take its place and defend the ritualists.

Fallback Plan:

<> Should it become clear that failure is imminent, fall back to a safe distance from the ritual site and brace for the impact of combusting energy. Be ready to collect fallen if it is possible to do so.

<> Should a call be made for a full retreat, collect as many of the Brotherhood as can be managed and get them to safety at the Radiant Heart Auxiliary.

<> Should the Heart be overtaken, retreat to the Cordor Outskirts by whatever means necessary.

Brotherhood Transport: Act 2 || Overview  3/11/183

<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>

  • When*: Approximately day 3 of month 11 (Uktar), 183 AR
  • Who*: Order of Ascension, Arcane Tower Wardens, Cordor & Guldorand Reserves
  • Where*: Nexus Falls Vicinity

<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>=<>

Loremaster Sedaene, with support from a curated team of transmutation specialists, will attempt to open a portal source gate that connects the Nexus leyline to the city of Beregost on the mainland in order to transport the Brotherhood of Dawn remnant there.

This ritual will take place close to between the Nexus Falls Portal Source and the power-laden crystal shard on its nearby islet. The specific steps to this ritual are detailed in Loremaster?s "Distant Shore" leaflet that accompanies this overview. While the ritual is ongoing, the assembled Order of Ascension and its allies will stand to defend against the strong chance Ssaerth's forces will attack and disrupt the Brotherhood's transport.

It is suggested that, during this time, Cordor, its Chancellor, and the Lord Vice Chancellor all be put under careful watch. The latter two should be warded with a Chaos Shield, Mind Blank, and a lifeline of prayer in case Ssaerth chooses to retaliate against the ritual through more pointed means. We have reason to suspect those who are not aligned to chaotic energies risk the greatest chance of harm. They should be monitored closely for any signs of distress.

It is believed that the Order will be able to attract Ssaerth's undivided attention while this ritual is ongoing, making it possible for those outside of the Nexus to attempt a concurrent ritual if they wish to. It is an opportunity that should not be wasted. There will likely not be another one such as this. Those who are daring might be able to use this advantage to scry the drow, or enter one of his many locations to glean valuable information to help end this war.

Should word come that another attempt is being made concurrently, Knight Commander Grantz will enact a plan to goad Ssaerth's focus to her so that he remains vulnerable and unaware of what goes on at his flank. Reserve aid has been requested of Cordor and Guldorand to see this ritual to fruition, for better or worse.

Distant Shore

Ritual Type: Arcane

School: Transmutation, Abjuration

Casting Time: 1-2 hrs.

Max Participants: 10, at least 4 transmuters

Language: Draconic

Components: Stabilizing runic circle, four sealing circles, five arcane vases, 100 components of each ritualist, a greater offering.

The primary purpose of this ritual is to open a one-way portal to the mainland or a distance beyond the Arelithian Archipelago. To achieve this, the ritual utilizes arcana that an arcane vase has broken down. The vase itself utilizes runes of high arcana and will break down energy funneled into it into its raw components until it is brought to arcane fire, where excess will be discharged safely. However, energy held within the vase will be drawn out by the practitioners and drawn into the gate site.

The ritual circle allows for augmentation of other components to be included, primarily a stabilizing circle that helps ensure the Weave remains intact during the ritual.

Setup:

    > After setting the runic circles, begin to place each arcane vase along the outer areas of the ritual circle near a nexus.

    > Charge each vase with a 9th-circle spell.

    > Each participant then enters the ritual circle with their spell components.

Ritual

    > Prior to setting the ritual site, a destination for the portal must be determined and accurately shared between each participant.

    > Prior to the beginning of the ritual, each participant must be in peak condition to ensure survivability. Once finished, all participants will be left in a weakened state with their arcana depleted.

    > After setup, as the participants enter the circle with their spell components, the lead ritualist will first channel their arcana into the portal site to establish a base for the other participants to use the spell components as they channel their arcana into the portal site.

    > Once the ritual begins, each participant must maintain their focus on channeling their arcana into the portal site. Failure to maintain the flow will cause the energies to dissipate. However, should the ritual be forced to end, the energies will likely recoil and explode. It is not likely any within the area will survive the blast.

    > Once the portal is opened, the Gate Stabilizers will sustain the portal on its own for an hour, and the practitioners may end the ritual. The gate can be closed by the lead ritualist may choose to dismiss the gate with a command word. Regardless of whether it is closed on command or allowed to remain open, once the gate closes, the energies of the gate will be scrambled by the pillars so that it cannot be reopened.

Finding Ssaerth - Results - 23/10/183

Date: 26th of Marpenoth, 183 AR (23/10/183)

Involved: Aberran Oakley, Juniper Oakley, Cinders Char, Laelia, Cal Quinn, Claude de Leon, Cordor Guard, House of Vigilance, House of Ascension

=Context=

A team was formed to plan up a way to get further information on Ssaerth and his location, with secondary objectives being rooting out any hideouts or headquarters he might have[1]. This operation was approved by the Chancellor, Commander, and Captains. It was additionally kept quiet until the day of to lessen the chance of Ssaerth laying traps.

This team was supported by the Cordor Guard, House of Vigilance, and House of Ascension should information be found that could result in the need of a quick assault or quick defense of Cordor.

The Team began their operation in the Cultural District, near the portal. This location was used as it was one of the most recent portal locations used by Ssaerth directly[2]. Juniper and Laelia opened the portal[3], the rest of the team going in. Laelia remained behind as a safeguard for the portal in the chance a quick escape was needed. Guards were set around the portal to protect the site.

The team found themselves in a cave system unknown to all of them. Insectoids and umber hulks greeted them only at first. An unknown male ran up requesting assistance, he looked ragged and worn. This man explained he was taken by Ssaerth's forces when he went to scavenge for food with his group in the swamps[3].

He stated everyone else was taken, and he only survived by hiding in the nearby cave waters. The team asked him to wait while they investigated further into the cave network. Most was not noteworthy, until the Ritual Site was discovered.

A large circle was made into the center of a larger portion of the cave, surrounded by a large pool of blood. A quick inspection found that the blood was likely from humanoid origins. While inspecting, Aberran briefly stepped too close to the ritual circle due to a portion of it being obscured by blood. It tore most of his foot off, the ritual consuming it. The flesh bound together to make a small infantile homunculus. The team decided to cast multiple disjunctions onto the ritual to remove it, which was done successfully. An explosion of blood covered the team, and the cave began to drip and pool in it.

The team pulled back, the prisoner ran past into the caves to hide saying the portal that took him reopened. Pressed to keep moving, the team opted to go through the portal.

The team then found themselves in a large library, with tables setup in the middle with papers and documents thrown about. Before an investigation could be made a defense of driders, drow, and orc-blooded persons attacked the team. After a long fight, it was decided there was little that could be found in a reasonable amount of time, instead deciding to burn the library to strip it's use from the enemy. The team reentered the portal again to escape the flames.

This time they found themselves in the sun, on a resort-like island somewhere in the sea. The island is notable for the small housing and amenities it had, likely having hosted a small village or community at one point. Now, however, it was overrun by Ssaerth's forces. The team found themselves in the center of a major encampment and were quickly attacked.

Beaten badly, the team used their spells and skills to narrowly avoid death, but not injury. A call was made to retreat via teleportation. No counter assault was made by Ssaerth, and a call was made to regroup and plan next steps. All were to stand down after a while.

=Results=

Three Locations used by Ssaerth were found. A cave with a Necromantic Blood ritual was undone. A library housing books, plans, and documents was found and burned. An island remains of the three locations, currently untouched and housing a large number of Ssaerth's forces.

This island is tropical in nature, a small village taken over. Docks are visible, likely where his ships take harbour[4].

The ritual consumes flesh and form to then make blood homunculi. While the ritual was undone, it is possible a number of creations were made and transported elsewhere. A number of Cordorians were fed to this already[5].

The Library could not be searched properly before it was burned down.

Finding Ssaerth - Update & Plan

PLANNERS: Cinders Char, Aberran Oakley, Juniper Oakley, Cal Quinn, Laelia

==DETAILS==

With the collective efforts of the planners and various others, a greater understanding of the portal network is understood and ways to use it.

The goal set forth was to discover a way to find the drow, Ssaerth, who has remained elusive and guarded. After consulting sources like an expert planeswalker and Thoramind as well as investigation and study of the portals, several plans have taken shape. While there are additional plans, they shall wait should this one fail.

The Portal Network, using a demi-plane coined "The Void", is able to open two portals at once. The demi-plane acts as a bridge between these two locations. Through observation, it is found that often only two portals are active at a time, an entrance portal and an exit portal. This is not a hard rule, as occasionally portals can be re-entered once exited, or two locations having been struck by portals in swift succession could be multiple opened portals.

With recent discoveries, it was found that these portals leave magical "tracks", which can be traced. This however requires one to be within the demi-plane to cast the spell to trace these connections. Doing so however will reveal the location of where these portals have been opened to.

Recently, Ssaerth himself has used the portal network to strike at Cordorians. This means we can see where he portalled from, and hone into his location. This also gives the possibility to discover where his forces of assassins and the remaining army might be staging from.

==THE PLAN==

The Planners shall seek out the latest portal location opened, using arcane guidance. Once in location, the Planners will force open the portal long enough for a few to through, leaving one or two behind as a safeguard. Those inside shall perform the spells needed to locate the locations of the portalling locations. If time permits, gain any additional information before retreating through another portal.

From here, if forces are available and the information gathered is sufficient, a task force will be sent to the found locations. With hope we can find Ssaerth and see him slain, as well as any people still loyal to him.

Details and specifics will need to be finalized depending on availability, and information discovered. Regardless of outcome, this shall be a step towards ending this war and the strife it brings.

For specific questions, seek Cinders Char or Aberran Oakley.

D19/M8/183 A.R. :: Meeting with Lord Commander Jarlson RE: SSaer

D19/M8/183 AR

Meeting with Lord Commander Jarlson

Attending:

Lord Commander Jarlson - His Majesty's Royal Guards

Vice Chancellor Lord Thomas Castemont

Commander Lord Gabriel Blackwood

Senior Aide Lady Alaina Castemont

Senior Aide Cal Quinn

Naval Captain Claude Alazahd de Leon

Lady Rosette Blackwood de Leon

LCJ: King Edward, is ever worried for his people, in these recent attacks.

TC: Understandable, as are we all.

LCJ: The King request an update on the plans of his elected government.  Lord Steed would have been here in my stead.  But, Lord Steed would not be as civil.  Hence I am here.

TC: At present our city is under attack by the Drow, Vharuan Ssaerth.  A monster who has enslaved many and caused suffering across the isle as well as sinking no less than three Naval Ships of the Kingdom.

LCJ: His Majesty wishes to know what plan the elected government has, specifically to stem the tide of loss of civilian life.

TC: Our current priority is to find him and either end him immediately or bring him in for justice for the crimes committed upon His Majesty' subjects.

LCJ: And if this priorty fails, and the conflict is drawn out?

TC: One of my own and Minister of Knowledge, Aberran is searching through the Shadow Gates to find him as it is known that he hides there.  I will give the word to Lord Gabriel Blackwood to ellaborate.  I have issued orders to have all civilians transported to Castle Darrowdeep.  A clinic will be set up there.  We will defend the Kingdom to our dying breath and do all we can to apprehend this monster and stop him.

GB: While the Minister of Knowledge pursues his lead, I've asked the Navy to scoutt out the adjacent islands, to look for movement.  It is my belief that, though I have no proof of it, that there is a chance Ssaerth's made a fort on a island.  To move a thousand men without break in a straight sail from the mainland doesn't seem feasible.  There has to be a trail to be picked up somewhere.  If not in Treadstone or Andunor, elsewhere.  Furthermore, after the recent bombardment, the Navy checked our Treadstone.  The Spider was not there.

LCJ: Gentlemen.  The people of Cordor is this city's lifeblood. We are at war with a faceless enemy.  Even if we triple the men, we would still be at a disadvantage.  Whatever you do, ensure it limits innocent casualties.  The Palace will not stand for the buying of time with the lives of her citizens.  You were chosen by the people to lead and protect.  So, lead and protect.

TC: Nor will we, Lord Commander. I am unsure what you are implying.  I have served this Kingdom faithfully for eight years and have given my life for it.  If you, or the Palace have alternative suggestions to this war, I would gladly hear it.

LCJ: The Palaace simply wishes to know if the government has a plan or not.  As I stated, the losses have been unacceptable.  The resources of the Palace are at your command.  Deal with the threat, and quickly.  With whatever means necessary.

TC: They have.  As soon as we find him, we will need every abled man and woman who can fight to bring this monster to justice.  In the mean tiime, extra troops would be greatly appreciited to aid in the evacuation of our civilians to the Castle grounds.

LCJ: I would suggest you choose who to evacuate, Lord Castemont.  The castle will not fit an entire city.

TC: Women and children.  The elderly and sick.

LCJ: We shall see what men can be spared for such aa task on our part.  I would suggest you set up the grounds around the castle in preparation for overflow.

TC: You have our deepest gratitude, Lord Jarlson.

(Direction to Cal to see this done with tents, barricades, food, water.)

LCJ: Castle Darrowdeep is ultimately built for garrison, not a flood of refugees.

TC: These are desparate times, Lord Jarlson.  I'm afraid this won't end until the Drow is dead.  So our priority is to find him.

LCJ: If you cannot locate the drow, find another way.  We will ultimately see hm dead, but if we must use deception to stop him in the interim, do so.  The amount of infantry I can provide will be limited.  However, his Majesty's cavalry will ride forth to patrol the areas around the castle grounds.

TC: Yes, my Lord.

The Final Act: Proposal for Ssaerth

Factions:

Ssaerth

Brotherhood of Dawn

Cordor (Battlefield)

Cordor (Heist)

Guldorand (Battlefield)

Guldorand (Heist)

Order of Ascension (Battlefield)

Order of Ascension (Garrison)

----------

Intelligence:

Vhuraen Ssaerth has been on a mission of pain and devastation against the surface. His wife, Miz'rena Ssaerth, was killed in a raid upon Ched Nasad by the Brotherhood of Dawn in 153 AR. Her sould was bound to a soul gem, though it is yet unclear if this was done by the Brotherhood or by the Lolthites who were investigating her as a Moondancer.

Ssaerth vowed to spend the rest of his centuries and his House's near limitless wealth to bring the pain he felt at her passing to all of us. He vowed there would be no rest, until her soul was allowed rest.

We know where the gem is and in a bargain struck with the monster, we are given the chance to retrieve it. This bargain was made to save Guldorand from Ssaerth's wrath, as the city would have been caught in the fallout of his forces attempting to crush the Brotherhood and retrieve the gem themselves.

Our goal is to retrieve the gem, crush his forces, and eventually bring him to the justice he deserves for the countless lives he has taken, tormented, and enslaved.

___________

The Proposal:

A letter written in Xanalress will be 'leaked' to the Brotherhood about a drow army coming through the forested valley on (x) date to try and surprise the Brotherhood.

Ssaerth will then be alerted.

Our people, who are willing, will join the battle alongside the Brotherhood to help wipe out as many of Ssaerth's men as possible. But only once the gem is in hand. Once we have Mez'rina's soul, the ceasefire is over. Ssaerth was clear on that.

A small team will be running a Heist on the Brotherhood's ship prior to the battle's start. We have identified the Brotherhood's ship in the bay outside of Guldorand and will use waterbreathing spells to walk along the bottom of the bay and then swim up to climb the side of the ship. Once aboard, we will sneak/pick lock our way down into the cargo hold, where we will take as many of the gems and pieces that *could* be the gem.

The list of potential items:

-Black gem with the symbol of a white spider within its heart

- Intricate Spider Pendant

- Moonstone, cloudy and swirling

- Another moonstone that could communicate with the holder in a limited capacity

- A piece of onyx that a face can sometimes be seen in

Once the gem(s) is(are) in hand, a parrot will be sent to Commander Gabriel to alert him. This is when our people would be free to join the battle, if they wished.

Forces will be stationed in Cordor and Guldorand, in case Ssaerth uses the battle as an opportunity to strike at either city while many of the warriors and defenders are away.

Those involved in the heist would then head to safety. Ssaerth will be after the gem once he knows we have it. He doesn't need to know we are executing the heist immediately, but he is intelligent and will know likely not long after.

Once we have the gem, we have a bargaining piece to lure him out.

He will come for his wife's soul. We need a plan once the gem is in hand on how to lure him out without Ssaerth holding one or both of our cities hostage.

Vice Chancellor's Report on Ssaerth Negotiations

The following is a recount of my discussion with Vharaun Ssaerth.

After we tried to locate Ssaerth through a ritual at Castle Darrowdeep using a portal left behind through which he returned Alaina, we were unable to find him.

As I was about to leave, another portal opened. Nothing came out, but it was clear that Ssaerth made it for me to step through and talk. Naturally, people didn't want me to go but I felt I had no other choice, I needed to know how we can end this.

Teriden managed to follow in behind me and the two of us ended up in some iron tower. I remember a lot of spikes, fire in the walls and iron flooring. We walked through to a door that opened where an unknown female human was waiting to take our names before she allowed for us to proceed through the next door.

Here we came across a Moon Elf with blond hair pretending to be Ssaerth. This appeared to have been a slave and Ssaerth was further toying with me. He appeared to us after the slave disappeared as an illusion.

He talked to me about what was needed to end this. I would kill the remainder of the Brotherhood in Guldorand, and he would consider the betrayal forgiven. This would all end.

I asked him why he was getting innocents to fight his war for him. Why he was using our people as tools to enact his personal vengeance. He then asked me to approach him and lowered his voice softly enough that Teriden could not hear.

His reason was, and I quote: "Because I want to prove any man would go to my lengths to avenge a lover. Even you."

This is only further confirmation that Ssaerth seems to have his heart set to trying to break me. I told him that I would never cause harm upon innocents for the sake of vengeance.

I tried to further appeal to him and have him agree to keep us out of his vendetta, but his illusion vanished. We stepped through another portal and were returned to the Castle grounds.

Signed,

Lord Vice-Chancellor

Ssaerth Plan Meeting

Day 10, Month 11 (Uktar), 183 AR

On behalf of Lord Thomas and Lady Alaina, myself, Charissa (Char) and Kritheris attended this meeting on the chance Ssaerth may try to spy on us through him.

- Recap -

Knight Commander, Guardian, Lady Alis Grantz begun the meeting by recapping the events that transpired several trines ago with the brotherhood.

Quote - "The Radiant Heart granted the Order of Ascension permission to sanctuary the Brotherhood at the Auxiliary so we could remand them to the mainland for proper justice. We do not trade in lives, such is the message we wished to send to Ssaerth."

Loremaster Sedaene Lamott then provided information on the ritual performed.

Quote - "To see success we had, I had to prepare a number of wards against any attempts Ssaerth make make. In addition, I also needed to ensure we had enough stored arcana so such a portal be opened. I have since also provided simple plans that could be used to ward off his attempts to addy and scramble us portals. I have left it in Cordor's hands to see the idea given more life."

Guardian Alis then finished the recap.

Quote - "The ritual was a success. But Ssaerth attacked, sent all four hundred and seventy of the slain brotherhood to do his bidding. And it was a message to us. Brother killing brother, friends."

"We managed to get most of the living ones to Beregost, but there were many casualties. I called a retreat. Apparently. I do not recall those moments. I woke in the Void with several others too."

"In the plane: Ssaerth taunted uses he attempted to make deals, his usual bargains. He sent a prisoner and demanded we kill him, in exchange for our freedom. I refused, but some wanted to take the arrangement. He toyed with us, similar fashion, goading our morals and tossing ethical queries our way. He seemed to enjoy the squabbling of our voices. We tried to examine where we were, but there was little to see or touch. It was a box of darkness."  Guardian Alis then finished with this.

"Then we were suddenly transports to the Shadow Trade post. Lord Castemont paid a ransom in coin, it seems."

Referencing the transcript in regards to Alis encounter with an apparition of Ssaerth, Loremaster Lamott had this to say.

She was able to use her study with divination to, on touch, see Ssaerth when he presented himself to Alis. But it was vaguely nor was it enough for her to identify the spell utilized to create this meeting. She then stated she didn't intend to protect Lord Castemont directly, but the need to protect his mind is a must. Loremaster Lamott then suggested a four device network, it hopes to ward against Ssaerth scrying directly.

Cinders Char of the Cordor Guard then elaborated on a scroll he needed, one he used to return to the mainland. If three of these scrolls could be rounded up, twenty four people could be taken with this specific scroll. This being in regard to location moving.

Aberran then commented on the portals, that they are not long distance. The demi-plane, also known as the Void, acts a corridor to length the reach.

Loremaster Lamott then added she could form a divine ritual to find its location. However, she then states Ssaerth may be anticipating such a thing. Before any further action could be taken, more information on the device being used to enhance his magic.

Laelia then choked on the resistance to her tapping into this void, was light. However there is no concrete proof if it was a fluke or if such a thing leaves Ssaerth vulnerable and can be exploited. But more protection would be advised if she were to attempt it again.

Aberran then stated that entry to the Demi-Plan without zero issue. Aberran then elaborated on having worked on these portals, stating so long as it is a location portal once opened, it can be reopened. He has been working some spell work to force open a portal to the demi-plane where ever needed.

Loremaster Lamott explained she is able to open portals to these places without Ssaerth's network, she just needs to draw on memories from one?s mind. Stating prior she had opened a gate to Beregost in the first place. Should this be needed.

Laelia then stated in short, we venture to her Cynosure in the Plane of Shadows with a team of ritualists she gets the shadows riled, angry and full of negative energy, and then we invert his Void into the Black Lake. Illusionists, necromancers, and abjurers are needed. Something else stated was more wraiths and minions from his demi-planes. Large part of this ritual needs to be done shrouded from meddling from the Nightsinger.

Alis, Juniper, Gabriel, Sedaene, Laelia and Cinders then further discussed potentially distracting Ssaerth as this went on. To keep any and all pressure off the ritual's performance.

Kritheris then went into detail about some necromancy that the group needed to be enlightened on, in regards to Aberran's plan three.

There is such thing as energy flux. When channeling NEP, it is affected by what it saturates. In the case of a soul that embraces undeath it is proceeded by that soul into negative or black Ki. Kritheris made a strong point that this would only empower the enemies, putting things in Saaerth's favor and pressuring the ritualist and unnecessary causing fatalities. Kritheris stated if the demi-plane isn't destroyed quickly the risk increases and failure is imminent.

Arkhan of the Arcane tower suggested a distraction within the void to hopefully shift Ssaerth's focus from the ritual. The moment the explosion goes off, the ritual begins. Ssaerth will have to make a choice.

This concluded the meeting and it was mutually decided that another meeting with some to fruition to finalize a plan.

Ssaerth's Portalling Network - Information

Date: 15th of Elasias, 183 AR (15/8/183)

Involved: Aberran Oakley, Juniper Oakley, Charissa Seper, Laelia, Cinders Char, Cordor Guard

==Details==

Ssaerth's Portal Network is used for two functions. Moving troops and people in large numbers swiftly and quietly to almost anywhere. A secondary purpose is for communication, as Ssaerth and others have been noted to speak through these portals.

These portals appear similar to Shadow Doors, however operate much differently. They are generally a one way portalling system with two locations found upon the Prime. Exit portals, such as the one found in the Abandoned Archives, can not be entered through, only exited upon.

Additionally, between the portals is a small space which is entirely void of light, objects, or anything. There is no floor, ceiling, or walls; all one can see is darkness. In this space one can open portals to the existing exit portals, or portals to random locations (note: It is uncertain if these random locations are forced or are purely random).

For the two portals to be made in the Prime, a person needs to go to the desired locations and place what is known as a Seed, a magical item or ritual to grow the portal. Additionally, these portals can only be made in dark locations, such as caves, unlit homes, poorly lit hallways, abandoned archives, etc..

==Plan==

Aberran Oakley, Juniper Oakley, Laelia, and Cinders Char have agreed on two plans. The first is towards researching the creation of their own portal seed, and then divining through it in an attempt to discover the location of Ssaerth and his staging grounds. Additionally the creation of the portal seed can be bypassed by using one of Ssaerth's portals left over, however this causes a need to wait for them to be used again.

A secondary plan is to create an explosive with enough energy to collapse the small demi-plane, to reduce Ssaerth's ability to rapidly deploy his troops. This will be used should the first be unsuccessful.

==Contex==

Following right after the events of the "Observing Spider"'s bombardment on Cordor, Aberran Oakley requested assistance in investigating an aspect of Ssaerth's tools, naming how he was able to move troops and assassins into and around Cordor.

A team went below to the Abandoned Archives where the last group of assassins was encountered. A young girl named Elizabeth was found separated from her family, mother reportedly crushed under falling buildings. Elizabeth stated she saw "strange holes" while hiding in the abandoned archives, and agreed to show the investigation team to it.

Elizabeth was able to reveal the location of not a hole, but a portal noted to be used by Ssaerth. Upon this discovery, Elizabeth was escorted above by the Guard for safety and assistance.

Via divination on the portal found in the Abandoned Archive, the location of the entry portal was discovered in the abandoned mining cave outside of Darrowdeep's main gate. Upon this discovery, the team reported their findings, a larger force gathered to investigate.

Upon entering the caves and moving through, an area of darkness was found, with the portal. However, as the team got closer, a voice was heard saying to light the fuses or to activate the explosives. It was a trap. The cave began to collapse around the team, in which portals were opened and many were able to escape. Aberran, Juniper, Arthur Jenson, and Cassandra were cut off from the escape portal. Aberran attempted to quickly study the portal as the caves collapsed, until the four of them were forced to use it, entering the small demi-planar void space.

The four were attacked by shadows and even a shadow dragon in this space. A swift attuning and search found an exit portal from this space, the four going through. This lead to a random ice floe in the Arelithian Sea, stranding the four. Quick action by the rest of the team saw the four magically called to safety.

After the collapse of the cave, the portal in the Abandoned Archives vanished.

Observing Spider Bombardment of Cordor - 15/8/183

Date: 15th of Elasias, 183 AR (15/8/183)

Involved: Cordor, Ssaerth's Forces

==Contex==

The "Observing Spider", a ship controlled by Ssaerth the drow, opened fire with its light cannon upon the city. It targeted the main square of Cordor first, then towards highly populated or areas of importance such as the Barracks, Palace, and Nomad.

Notably, the aim of the cannon seemed to follow the movements of civilians and whatever location the majority of Cordor was currently in.

Cordorians were ushered into the Mercantile Building at first, however when shots continued to threaten the wooden structure the crowds were directed into the barracks, and into the Records Room. From there they were brought below to the Abandoned Archives. Non-combatants were urged to use teleportation to leave Cordor entirely, and to head to Guldorand or Brogendenstein.

It was here the crowds lingered for a moment before using the subterranean dark area to move through the city towards the Cordor Library. An ambush was prepared in the Abandoned Archives however, as assassins poured in and attacked the moving crowds. The assassins however were swiftly dealt with.

The crowd moved upwards into the Cordor Library and then into the Red Temple, securing the location for a time while the Cordorian Guard, lead by Gabriel Blackwood, saw to the evacuation and recovery of additional Cordorian civilians.

The Palace was fired upon, however a notable arcane shield surrounding the palace negated any damage.

The crowd then moved to the Nomad and the Playhouse below, to get people further underground. This idea backfired as the Nomad was then struck, catching it on fire and filling the Playhouse with smoke. Finding no safe place in Cordor, the crowds were ordered to Brogendenstein to regroup.

Upon regrouping, calls came that the "Observing Spider" had ceased its bombardment of the city and to return. Emergency actions were performed to see fires put out in the Nomad, as well as across the city. Rubble was moved swiftly.

As a final act, the "Observing Spider" fired a selective light cannon beam, hitting Sergeant Reginali, vaporizing the man fully, save for his facial hairs. Resurrection was impossible.

Day 19, Month 8 (Elasias (Highsun)), 183 AR
       Aberran Oakley

On Ssaerth; the past week.

All on Ssaerth, the last week.

This report won't follow format, there is too much to write about.

I'll address the Battle for the Valley, the Heist, the Aftermath, the Parley.

. . . Battle of the Valley . . .

1) The plan agreed upon was simple. A team of heisters, Claude, Rose, Rey, was to seize the soulgem in the Brotherhood's possession, while the battle raged. Said soulgem was on a Brotherhood vessel.

2) Ground forces, led by Gabriel Blackwood, would only enter the Valley from the Copper Mines, after the soulgem would be confirmed secured.

3) Ground forces, consisting of the Cordor Guard, Guldorand Constables, Order of Ascension and other unaffiliated volunteers, led by Gabriel Blackwood, reach the entry point to the Valley, and wait on the heister's signal.

4) While they wait, the Ground forces are spotted, two dracholichs land nearby, quickly dispatched. The battle in the Valley begins, Ssaerth's artillery decimates the Brotherhood, before Ssaerth's men sweep in.

5) Gem secured, the Heisters send a wisp across, the Ground forces enter the Valley. The Brotherhood's formation had already broken, many groups of underdarkers scattered across the Valley take to fighting pockets of the Brotherhood.

6) We flush out Ssaerth's men, no casualties on our end. Ssaerth signals a retreat, his mercs lens and leave their slaves to slow us down. Artillery barrage covers their retreat with us still in the Valley.

7) Some fall, but are picked up and nursed back to health in Guldorand. No casualties. The battle concludes.

8) The Brotherhood suffers catastrophic casualties, losing almost all of their men. We estimate to have killed about half of Ssaerth's forces on the field. The gem is secured.

. . . The Heist . . .

I know little of the Heist, other than Claude risked his life and was rescued by Rosette. The trio gathered multiple stones, studied later in the day.

. . . The Aftermath . . .

I know little of the events following the Heist, but Claude and Rosette studied the loot in an attempt to identify the soulgem. During the study, an onyx cracked and opened a portal to the Abyss within the lower floor of the Lotus.

They are quick to call for help, Rey, Cassandra, myself show up and help combat the demons pouring out of it, until we managed to close said portals.

No casualties all around.

Having identified the soulgem later on, Rosette and Claude attempted contact and devised a plan, attempted during the parlay.

A temporary binding ritual to be performed on the Leviathan, in order to have Miz'rena talk to Ssaerth, in hopes to convince him to surrender himself and stop the war.

. . . The Parlay . . .

Ssaerth summons Lord Thomas for a parlay in the hedge waters. We're advised they are watching the docks, and any show of force will be met with resistance, and him leaving the parlay site.

Different Cordorians board the Leviathan, and move towards the hedge waters.

On location, we're met by the Observing Spider, disguised as the HMS Arvora.

Thomas Castemont, Gabriel Blackwood, Rosette de Leon board the Observing Spider for negotiations.

We learn then Ssaerth had thirty slaves hostages, and had no interest in speaking to Miz'rena at all, nor did he wish to surrender to the various governments of the island.

He demanded we gave him Miz'rena's soulgem, in exchange for the slaves, and the contract binding his mercenaries to him. No word spoken on the drow who simply swore fealty to him. He would then depart Arelith.

A bluff is attempted, his deal agreed to and the slaves carried over on the Leviathan, led below deck.

We attempted the ritual, and released Miz'rena's soul. Though successful, we ran out of time, the Leviathan was stuck by an explosion.

It is my belief the slaves were rigged with explosives, likely ingested, as the explosion did not damage the top deck, and we were all unscathed. Furthermore, we did not see the Spider fire at us at all.

The Leviathan was quick to sink, and I and Rose went with it, as I attempted to get to the slaves. I did not make the connection back then.

We were rescued by the Ironhelm, which, in the meantime, arrived in the hedge waters together with the Tempest.

What remains of the slaves can be seen floating on water, charred and mangled.

The Earthkin and Guldorand heavily damage the Spider, forcing it to flee.

. . . Long Night . . .

Attacks followed the same day. Some modus operandi as all the other attacks in our city. Groups of assassins infiltrate our walls from different entrances, likely through use of the Void.

Inspection of an assassin reveals Ssaerth had placed a bounty on -all- Cordorians, regardless of station.

Ssaerth's men poison the waters.

The attacks are repelled, with a handful civilian casualties.

Forested Valley Battle Planning - Meeting Minutes

Date: 1st of Elasias, 183 AR (1/8/183)

Present:

Guldorand: Rikus Vahl (High Sheriff), Brinja (Vice-Sheriff), Arathion (Constable)

Cordor: Thomas Castemont (Vice-Chancellor), Gabriel Blackwood (Guard Commander), Claude de Leon (Naval Captain), Aberran Oakley (Minister, Scribe), Rosette de Leon (Minister), Alaina Castemont (Aide), Juniper Oakley (Aide)

There were four ticks in the margin.

There is a list of actionable items at the bottom of this document. Please review them so they may be understood prior to the battle.

==Discussion==

Prior to the official start of the meeting, an illusion arrived from a paladin stating that a large movement of troops and material was found in the Andunorian Ports, several hundred reinforcements. The spy watching was slain. Rikus states that this was Ssaerth getting ready to move.

Gabriel Blackwood read off the proposed plan for the final battle against Ssaerth's forces.

It was clarified the Brotherhood of Dawn has brought five hundred able bodies for the battle. Gabriel Blackwood states that the Brotherhood is beginning to pack up their camp in the Forested Valley. They are expected to march in nine days from writing, on the tenth of Elasias.

Upon questioning of the battle grounds being near Guldorand, Brinja confirmed that the Constables are alerted and siege weapons are ready. Rikus added that batteries and troops are prepared.

Rikus added that the Aegis of Myon will be assisting in the defense of Guldorand, along with Brinja stating the Tuskians shall be assisting as well.

Rosette de Leon stated the allied forces should have control over the gem containing Ssaerth's wife's soul by the time of the battle.

Thomas Castemont states that Ssaerth's army contains drow in it. It is likely the assault will happen at night.

Gabriel Blackwood states that it is unlikely for Ssaerth's Army to assault Guldorand right after the battle due to being fresh from a tiring battle, likely unable to fight the Fortress City and its walls and garrison.

Thomas Castemont states that Guldorand can not stand a chance against an army that size. Even if they do lose people in the battle, Ssaerth has fancy weapons he could use. Thomas then asks if we could fabricate sun orbs to weaken their army.

Alaina Castemont asked if there should be concern of the Dracolich from Andunor being involved. Rosette de Leon states that intelligence has shown that the city of Andunor will not be assisting Ssaerth's Army.

Rosette de Leon stated that Ssaerth has stated his goal was not Guldorand, but to move the Brotherhood away from Guldorand. Thomas Castemont replied saying drow lie. Gabriel Blackwood confirmed that Ssaerth has lied prior. Rosette replies that Ssaerth has kept his word on the ceasefire.

Rikus brought up the topic of sun orbs once more, asking if Sedanene Lamott has such devices. Sedaene stated they did not have such devices. Rosette de Leon suggested employing sa vigorous amount of Sunbeam scrolls.

A Cordorian Marine sent an illusionary message, stating they had discovered that on an islet to the west someone is using it for a lot of bombard practice.

Alaina brought up that Myon is currently thrown into elections and may not have much support to add to the upcoming battle. Arven and Nu'ae had stepped down.

Gabriel Blackwood spoke that we are aware there will be unknowns. That the combined forces will need to be adaptable. He also states that the Earthkin Alliance will not be relied upon for this. It is Cordor, Guldorand, and the Radiant Heart. Myon additionally, if they can afford to assist.

Gabriel goes on to state that with the warband, the Brotherhood, and the cities, the allied forces have the numbers and weaponry for the battle.

Sedaene Lamott states that The Alliance still recovers from the recent attacks as well. To expect them to act would stress their numbers too far, similar to that of Myon after their own troubles.

Thomas Castemont suggests if the Prelate would allow the Radiant Heart Auxillary to add in more forces from other keeps. Sedanene Lamott replies that she will force it to the Prelates, but it is unlikely.

Arathion Irestorm asks if Ssaerth will attack the forested valley directly on the assumption that the gem will be there. Rosette de Leon states that Ssaerth is attacking directly out of his own need to see the Brotherhood brought to justice for his wife's death. Gabriel Blackwood confirms that Ssaerth's Army is targetting the Brotherhood crusaders.

Thomas Castemont asks which direction Ssaerth's Forces will be coming from. Gabriel Blackwood responds that there is no method to know. Gabriel suggests he will use the same methods used to get into Cordor, via shadow doors.

It is stated the allied forces will not be able to control the location of the battle. Scouts will need to be about to discover however Ssaerth's Army decides to move.

Discussion moved to bombard placements on Guldorand's walls. Cordor offered to deploy a number in support.

Gabriel Blackwood comments that the allied forces will not be able to go into the fight warded and prepared magically, as the faezress is stated to be unstable for the fight.

Thomas Castemont asks if Ssaerth will be there himself, in which Brinja suggests it was "not his style" to be present.

Thomas Castemont suggests using divination and rituals prior to the battle to find Ssaerth. If he was taken out, the battle would be won easily. Sedaene Lamott states that there are rituals to heighten a diviner's powers, suggesting it should be done. Thomas agrees, but says there would still be risks. Rikus agrees to use divination, or the concept of it.

It is brought up that scriers will need to be working throughout the battle. All are in agreement.

It is brought up by Rosette de Leon that it was likely Ssaerth will be watching the battle from the Shadow Void. Gabriel Blackwood comments that said planar location allows him to communicate with his own generals.

Thomas Castemont suggests these rituals to happen regardless, suggesting Aberran Oakley assist. Aberran replies that he can do so, though the short timing is ill suited for ritual work.

Gabriel Blackwood requests Rikus and Brinja to ward the Brotherhood of the incoming threat and to teach them about all entry points into the valley. The Brotherhood will need to shape the battlefield as well as they can. Guldorand agreed to this.

Thomas Castemont asks the Chain of Command for the battle. Rosette de Leon and Gabriel Blackwood comment that Gabriel has been taking command up to this point. It was up to Guldorand, however. Brinja suggests a joint lead instead.

Brinja's suggestion is that Gabriel leads the movement of troops and to follow his word, however suggests that herself be at his side as she is more aware of the region, city, and landscape. All seem to be agreeing to this, Thomas suggesting that advisors and strategists are normal. Gabriel shall be the leading voice.

Thomas Castemont suggests that it becomes known that Gabriel Blackwood will be taking command. Any who are incapable of following orders need to be removed, forcibly or otherwise.

Gabriel Blackwood speaks to Brinja of wanting to understand the side and hidden paths surrounding the Forested Valley. Claude de Leon suggests to use the following days to scout the area. Rikus Vahl agrees to a joint walk of the Forested Valley area in the coming days to understand the lay of the land.

Thomas Castemont speaks of Cordor's defense during the conflict, and who will take charge. Malcolm Dunsmuir and Arathion Irestorm state that the Order of Ascension is tasked with the defense of Cordor during the Guard's absence.

It is brought up that the House of Vigilance should be approached to assist in the defense of Guldorand during the battle.

Rosette de Leon asks what is to happen to the soul gem once it is obtained. Thomas Castemont states that the drow's soul within should be released, unless it can be used to lure Ssaerth out. Gabriel Blackwood suggests using it immediately after the battle, due to his weakened army and hopefully weakened state of stress.

Gabriel brought up the topic of the Navy, and naval actions. Due to intel given, it is likely Ssaerth's navy was practicing aiming at land targets. Naval actions will be left up to Claude de Leon and Shandy.

It was stated that there are means to protect from the Observing Spider's light beam cannon, though it will take prediction on where it is aimed. The means is an invention by Cinders Char, who may be putting it onto a rental vessel.

Shandy shall need to be looked to for naval command until Claude de Leon can return from assisting to retrieve the gem. The main focus shall be to keep any naval ships off the cities so they are unable to strike the ports.

Encounter with Ssaerth - 29/05/183

The report will be brief, but by no means its contents should be overlooked.

Rosette and I were in the barracks, when we noticed the forming of red mist shrouding the halls.

We briefly looked around the area, before I sent Galia, Rey and Steffensen in the barracks to join Rosette, while I checked the sewers.

Upon returning, I rejoin the aforementioned group, who in the meantime found the cause of the mist.

Our portal room had been compromised, the portal itself under a foreign ward, rendering it useless.

A body had been hung in the middle of the room, with a message reading, 'Where is our information, Castemont'.

The men are ordered to retrieve the body before I head out to appraise Albet- during which Steffensen informs me flames began to sprout out of the portal.

Upon returning in the barracks, Rosette is asked to reach out to Ssaerth, while I send for Claude and Velasco.

Ssaerth hijacks the body of a Palace Guardsman in order to speak to us, this action slowly killing said Guardsman.

Able to speak Xanalress, Rosette and Claude discuss with Ssaerth, who is told of our current progress.

Ssaerth had been clear in his intention to bring his fight to Guldorand to personally retrieve the gem holding Miz'rena's soul, in possession of the Brotherhood of Dawn which camped just outside Guldorandi walls.

While I may have managed to persuade Ssaerth to let Guldorand be and give us more time, under the promise that we will be the ones to personally hand him the gem over without any ruse behind it, I was unable to save the Guardsman.

By the end of the conversation with Ssaerth, the Guardsman was no more than a husk, despite his best efforts at fighting Ssaerth's control over his body.

Drakonus, Laelia, Kritheris, Midas and Ryana join us after Ssaerth's departure.

Attempts at healing the Guardsman were tried by Galia, Ryana and Drakonus, all to no avail.

When brain-death became evident, well-earned mercy was granted by myself.

Steffensen and Kritheris saw to a proper and respectful burial of the fallen.

The flames in the portal room left no lasting damage,

Ssaerth had summoned a volcano over the portal.

The portal itself should be functional, although debris might need to be cleared if it hasn't been already.

Our position as a Kingdom hasn't been compromised further, we ceeded nor promised more than we already have.

Guldorand has been informed of the events by Rosette and Claude, who spoke to Brinja.

Our nations will prevail.
