The Press Gang 25/12/177
Hello, hello! Chief Editor Alter here with another issue of the Press Gang! It seems like the final pieces are moving into play as the Amnian naval fleet has arrived in Cordor, led by Admiral Roman Tallyzar. But as tensions rise from overseas, it seems tensions are rising in the city as well, a bloody conflict taking the lives of three and injuring two.
A statement from King Edward Cordor has been released regarding the arrival of the Amnian naval fleet while Queen Jennifer Cordor met with the Republic of Guldorand for a diplomatic summit regarding recent incidents of tension concerning the city of Cordor and Guldorand. Staff Sergeant Lefric Ruston arrived to greet the Queen and the Republicans when a misunderstanding led to the prompt ban of armed Cordorian military personnel in Guldorand.
In Andunor, the election for the Devil's Table is still currently in place while Matron Luastra has announced the dissoulution of the Hel'vael House.
In other news, we have an interview with the very menacing guard, Arvalie, who is often seen patrolling the city. And for those interested in sailing, Captain Davis is looking to hire those interested in fighting pirates and slavers.
And last but not least, we have the continuation of "From Cordor with Love" from our very own Wildarse and an informational piece on how to find kelp for those aspiring chefs from Fee Sherman. And as always, thank you for reading the Press Gang and I'll see you all in the next issue!

Statement From the Palace
As some citizenry will already be aware, due to some unforeseen skirmishes in Maztika between New-Amnian countrymen and a few New-Whaterdeep invaders, the Grand Nation of Amn is entering a unsteady period with the City State of Whaterdeep. In this time of political uncertainty, our good friends from Amn have kindly requested that we play host to a small portion of its Navy, to better secure these waters, both for our sake and for theirs.
Further more, as Arelith has always been a stopping point between the Mainland and Maztika, safe port for men and women of all stripes, so it shall be for these fine men and women of the fleet. In the coming days you may see a heightened presence of Amnian military. Do not be alarmed. They are here merely as visitors and, I have been assured, shall mind their manners as such.
I also wish to assure the citizenry that whilst we consider Amn a fine ally, their grand wars are not our wars, and we have no desire to be dragged into them. So long as the Lords Alliance and it's allies remain neutral to Cordor, so we shall to them.

Guldorand Summit with Queen Jennifer Cordor
On the 15th of the 12th month (Nightal) 177 AR, the Republic of Guldorand hosted Queen Jennifer Cordor for a diplomatic summit regarding recent incidents of unrest concerning the city of Cordor and Guldorand, and to seek amicable solutions to several standing problems.
As the summit was concluding, Staff Sergeant Lefric Ruston and Corporal Cain arrived, unwarded and unarmed, to greet the Queen (who had already left) and the Republicans present, with Staff Sergeant Ruston introducing himself as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. After introductions were concluded, Secretary Ruston made a request for the meeting minutes to ensure a balance of information.
At this time, Sergeant Rolf Marr and Ambassador Antionette Rivorndir arrived. Introductions were made again with one of the Republicans hesitant at the presence of Lady Rivorndir's magic staff at her shoulder. The Republican was assured that the staff posed no threat to him.
Afterwards, Guardsman Vesryn Idriel arrived at the scene, misinformed that the Queen was in danger. He arrived with a spell mantle and Formian summons but was immediately ordered by Staff Sergeant Ruston to stand down as, "This is entirely wrong, dismiss the Formians and dispel, you look like an Andunorian" to which Guardsman Idriel complied.
At this point, the conversation between those present halted as the Cultural Minister of Guldorand expressed discomfort in being present in the presence of so many guards. The Cordorians were asked to leave to which they promptly did so. Staff Sergeant Ruston and the guards left the city of Guldorand and returned to Cordor.

A Bloody Conflict in Cordor Town Square
On the 21st of the 12th month (Nightal) 177 AR, a bloody brawl took place in the Cordor town square after a heated argument erupted. Witnesses state that Christian Kalloron, paladin of Jergal, had been arguing with the tiefling, Artemis Silver-Wind, for her bloodline and worship of the archdevil Bel. At this time, Evemere Dundragon entered the town square and began to admonish Kalloron for his words towards Silver-Wind, before soon being joined by Tatsufura Reiko. The argument became more heated and insults were exchanged before Kalloron began to leave. Dundragon then thanked him for his display of character, in which is believed to be an act of provocation, to which Kalloron took offense to. He turned around, ward upon his blade, and in retaliation of the perceived threat, Dundragon and Reiko began to ward as well.
It was at this time that the guard, Sion, revealed himself and shouted at Dundragon and Reiko to stop warding. Reiko complied while Dundragon continued, later claiming to have not heard the command. The guard began to fire arrows at Dundragon, Reiko moving in to defend her which Kalloron intercepted. Blows were exchanged and Kalloron was subdued by Reiko as Sion continued to fire from a distance, killing Reiko. Dundragon stepped forward to help Reiko, unarmed, but was also shot and killed by the guard. A civilian by the name of Ravn, who later claimed to have been hit by an arrow of Sion's, fired upon the guard as well before being killed by him as well.
It is important to note that the guard, Sion, shot to kill with no attempt to incapacitate instead. Sergeant Thekla was present at the scene and commanded Sion to stand down, which he ignored. After the conflict concluded, the Sergeant then ordered him into the barracks which he continued to ignore, threatening the crowd that had gathered to disperse. Eventually, the Sergeant had the guard follow her into the barracks and the slain were successfully raised and healed.
The Press Gang reached out to both General Flamma and the Ministry of Justice for their statement regarding the events. An investigation has begun to look into the situation and no official punishment will be given until the truth is found.
The Press Gang also reached out to Christian Kalloron who declined to comment.

An Interview with Arvalie
Alter: "So, Arvalie. Thanks for having me here. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for those of our readers who have yet to meet you?"
Arvalie: "Oh, yes. We are being the Arvalie, a gloaming. We are also one of the soldiers of the Cordor, too. "We are being born in the underdark, but we have come to live in the land of the sun."
Alter: "What made you want to leave the underdark and live on the surface?"
Arvalie: "The Underdark is having the drow, it is also being like living in the sewers of the world. All of the bad things go there, the worst of the monsters and the most evil of creatures. But the surface is not like this- it is having many pretty flowers and trees and the forests smell good and the world is being free. The sky reminds us of this."
Alter: "Was there any event in particular that made you want to leave the underdark or just a culmination of living down there?"
Arvalie: "... Yes, the human we are loving is betraying us in the worst of ways. She is falling to the evil and accepting that she is the monster, we will not let this one be a part of the life we will live."
Alter: "Are you comfortable with sharing who this person is or should we continue on?"
Arvalie: "She is dead to us now, her name will be forgotten like the pain she causes to the world."
Alter: "Of course. And when you left the underdark and came to the surface, what did you do first?"
Arvalie: "The first time we came to the surface we sat on the hill in the rain and the dark, we sat here beneath the tree and listened to all of the things. It was beautiful, we think."
Alter: "Was there any particular sensation you enjoyed the most? Maybe a sound, a scent, or a taste?"
Arvalie: "It was the smell, everything was smelling... Nice, it was not like the pits of slaves or the rotting mushrooms, it was like the flowers."
Alter: "And after all of that, where did you go from there?"
Arvalie: "We visited the Bendir but we were too scared to go inside, there were many of the soldiers when we walked to this place. We walked around until we found the Cordor, one of the humans helped us to do this."
Alter: "What was your first thought of the city and it's people?"
Arvalie: "Oho... We had many of the funny thoughts, we thought that the tallest humans would be the ones who are being in charge. They must be the strongest ones, yes? But the Cordor was being very kind to us, it did not care we were coming from the dark places of the world. It was treating us as the person, giving us the chances to live free in the land of the sun."
Alter: "Heh, it must have been surprising to find out that the city was led by the shortest human. I'm glad you enjoyed staying here, I know a lot of people have enjoyed your presence as well."
Arvalie: "Oho... This is being the kind thing to say, but yes- we still do not know why the humans are building so high when they cannot reach the tops of their buildings. We think the dwarves are getting this right."
Alter: "And what did you do while you settled into the city? If I remember correctly, you fought against the underdarkers many times, correct?"
Arvalie: "Yes, we have killed many of the drow and many of the pirates. We are doing this with many of the other ones, it is making these hunts into the easy thing. They are being too brave and for this, they die."
Alter: "And eventually, you became a guard. What made you want to do so?"
Arvalie: "We did this because we wanted to be protecting the place the Mala was living."
Alter: "You and Mala share a special bond, yes? Like family?"
Arvalie: "Yes, we are being told by the gnomed one we can be picking family. We picked her and she was picking us, she is being like the younger sister to us."
Alter: "How has your career been with the guards so far? Do you enjoy working as a guard?"
Arvalie: "We have been enjoying our time with the soldiers, yes. They are treating us well and we are being able to keep the Cordor safe from the bad ones, we are happy with this."
Alter: "Do you plan to stay with the guards for a while? Maybe one day become General Arvalie?"
Arvalie: "Oho... We do not think we can be the general, this is not who we are being. But we will stay with the soldiers for the long time we think, we are not seeing any reasons why we would stop."
Alter: "Ah, a shame. I would love to see all the recruits and guards salute while calling you 'General Arvalie'. Do you have any plans or goals in the future outside of the guards?"
Arvalie: "Oho... We would like to have the salutes but this is not the path for us- We are being the house decorator and the artist, we like to do these things when we are having the spare time. Maybe one day we will become the famous artist."
Alter: "Oh, I'd love to see that as well. What kind of art do you create?"
Arvalie: "The paintings mostly, we are having some of these hanging in our homes and some of the others, too. We do the statues but less often."
Alter: "And what about when you're not on duty or working on your art. Is there any hobby or pastime you enjoy?"
Arvalie: "We like to do the sailing, sometimes we will go and explore the places but we are usually being the very busy one. It is only being when the sun is out that we are having time, which we spend in the bed or doing the art."
Alter: "Does your aversion of the sunlight make it difficult for you? Especially considering that most surfacers are out during the day and sleeping at night."
Arvalie: "Yes, the sun is giving us the challenges. When we first came to the land of the sun we were being burned by this often and would lay in the bed making the whining noises but we are getting better at avoiding this."
Alter: "Oh, yes. Please do avoid situations that would force you to lay in bed and make whining noises. Do you ever wish you could one day walk under the sun without any harm to you?"
Arvalie: "We would like to do this but we are glad for the time in the dark we are having, the day is being too bright even if it did not burn us... We do not understand why the people do not sleep during the day still, the night is being quiet and calm and nice, the day is not any of these."
Alter: "Mm, I think it's because most people can't see in the dark as well as you and I. They tend to bump around in the dark, like little kittens."
Arvalie: "Oho... The baby cats are being very cute, they are having our eyes too."
Alter: "Any plans for a pet one day? Maybe a cat or a dog. Or even a bird."
Arvalie: "We are having the pet already, it is being called the Beebles."
Alter: "Beebles? What kind of pet is Beebles?"
At this point, Arvalie reached into her dress and pulled out a rat, waving it towards me. The rat wobbled around, having accepted it's fate.
Arvalie: "The Beebles is the rat, he is stupid but this is being okay. We care for him anyway."
Alter: "Nice to meet you, Mister Beebles."
Arvalie: "We have had the Beebles for the many years now, he is being the good one."
Alter: "... How long does a rat live for?"
Arvalie: "We do not know, he is being maybe twelve of the years old now? So at least twelve of the years."
Alter: "Hm. Well, I think we should start wrapping up this interview soon. Do you have anything else you would like to talk about yourself or say to our reader?"
Arvalie: "Yes, we want to tell the people that sometimes bad things are happening. Sometimes they are walking the wrong path and things are not feeling good- It is not being too late for them to ask for the help, they can always ask this of us."
Alter: "Well said. And before we end it here, I would like to ask you one last question I always ask in my interviews."
Arvalie: "He can ask this of us."
Alter: "If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?"
Arvalie: "The one word? This is being hard, the people are being many things. But we will pick... We will say that we are being fair, this is us. The fair one."
Alter: "In both personality and appearance."
Arvalie: "Oho..."
Alter: "Well, thank you for having me, Arvalie."
Arvalie: "We thank him for the questions, we are sorry if we are not giving the strongest of the answers. The common is not being our first tongue."
Alter: "I think the way you answer is unique to you. It is what makes you, you."
Arvalie: "It is being hard to do the poetic things in the common, but we are trying."
Alter: "Well, it's a good thing I'm not much one for poetry."
Arvalie: "We like this, sometimes we are being jealous of the ones who can speak the common well. It is helping them to be winning the hearts of the people, we think."
Alter: "Hm, maybe. To be honest, I think the way you speak is endearing."
Arvalie: "Oho... He is thinking so? We are glad for this, maybe this is why the people are laughing when we are saying we are the menacing one."
Alter: "Maybe. How did you learn common? Did someone teach you or did you study with books?"
Arvalie: "We were being taught most of this by the parents, we practiced some of this with the humans who were living below, too."
Alter: "What are your parents like, Arvalie?"
Arvalie: "Oh, they were being good at many of the things. They taught us how to be surviving on our own before we were the adult, they even picked our first name before we were old enough to decide we were the Arvalie."
Alter: "Can I ask what your first name was? And why you chose the name Arvalie?"
Arvalie: "Our first name was being the Trixis'narr, we chose the Arvalie because we liked the way it was sounding. It is being the pleasant word in our mouth, we think."
Alter: "Arvalie does sound nice. But it was a pleasure being able to speak with you and I think a lot of people will enjoy reading about you!"

From Cordor with Love Chapter IV
City of Cordor, The Lilting Lotus Social Club, The Secret Underground Meeting Room
Eleasis 15th, 183 AR
09:30 PM
"Well then," the Doctor leisurely looked away from the doors, savoring the moment. "Enough talk. Here and now we will bring the entire archipelago to its knees!"
The Dr. Coincidence's pointing finger darted towards the wearers of the magical robes sitting nearby: "You there, establish a communication channel with the secret Axehold Accords meeting room! Immediately!" she demanded.
"Perhaps..." the Treasurer tried to intervene, but a quick glance from the Doctor was enough to tell him that it would be easier to get a badger to give way in a tight hole than to argue with her now.
The magicians began to cast a spell, and soon vague images began to appear in the center of the hall, which began to take on the outlines of furniture and people. Soon, those present began to distinguish fragments of individual phrases, and at the other end, still vague figures, began to turn towards the table at which the conspirators had gathered.
"The spell has stabilized, mistress," reported the senior sorceress as the vision took the form of a well-lit, luxurious hall with an expensive oak table in the foreground. The representatives of the Kingdoms of the Arelith archipelago were sitting at the table, surrounded by an army of guards. All the attention of the rulers was riveted to the figure of the Doctor.
"Charming," the Doctor replied to the wizards with satisfaction. Then deliberately slowly she turned towards the Axehold Accords. All the supreme rulers of civil governments were there: the Chancellor of Cordor dressed in gold and black, the High Sheriff of Guldorand in battle uniform, the Coronal of Myon in the traditional white and blue robes of the followers of Corellon. Looking closely at the picture, she also made out the Thane of the dwarves, clad in heavy armor studded with large rubies, and the Mayor of the Bendir Dale in an elegant emerald dress. She gave them a haughty look before she spoke.
"Gentlemen, my name is Doctor Coincidence," she said, baring her teeth at her involuntary listeners. "Soon, you may find that your Kings, High Councils, and even your precious Dragon," she glanced at the overly defiantly grinning dwarf in the crown, "might begin to implement policies similar to those currently pursued by the King of Cordor."
Before she could finish, the echo of a heart-rending scream caught her attention. "Oh no! Anyway," Dr. Coincidence thought smugly to herself as she turned back to the Accords.
Those sitting at the Doctor's table kept looking at her in anticipation, mentally patting her on the shoulder. Soon, much to the delight of the villains, the Doctor spoke again, riveting their attention to the truly priceless reactions of the members of the Accords.
The previously skeptical-looking representatives of the nations exchanged thoughtful glances. An alarmed whisper swept through the hall. Everyone has already heard about what happened in Cordor. Many expected that the hero of the occasion would soon appear.
"If this woman is telling the truth, we will be facing the threat of an archipelago-sized civil war," the mayor of the Bendir Dale mused.
Thane Greenfield of Brogendenstein couldn't help but notice the worry on her face. He leaned towards the hin as far as his armor would allow: "I can say three things with certainty, Nia. First, whoever this witch is, something drives her crazy. Secondly, she is not bluffing. And thirdly, we defeated more serious enemies in the past, - we will beat this one too!" he whispered smirking and gently pushing her with his gauntlet. Nia squinted her eyes to the side in embarrassment.
"Look, it looks like the witch wants to say something else, huh" he pointed to the illusion in front of them, which was an enlarged version of a statuesque woman with glowing eyes. She was holding some kind of animal, at the sight of which Nia nodded approvingly and even cheered up a little.
Indeed, Dr. Coincidence briefly enjoyed the effect of the opening speech and briskly continued the onslaught: "If you want to avoid such an unenviable fate, you will pay me one hundred million gold!" The little finger of Doctor's left hand had already begun to spontaneously wind the curls of her luxurious red hair.
In response, from different parts of the table came low whispers, languid mutterings and other sounds of gears unhurriedly spinning in people's heads. However, at that moment, a vague shadow wedged itself into the picture. The Doctor leaned slightly to the side, causing representatives of the Accords to see a gigantic apparition of a badger. Through thunderous snores of the beast they managed to hear spell-twisted snippets of "House...only for the last quarter...from the budget of Cordor...". Then the shadow disappeared as quickly as it had appeared before. The image of a woman once again turned her shining gaze to them. This time there was a hint of annoyance on her face.
"You will pay one BILLION gold," she snarled.
The hall instantly exploded with noise. There were accusations that the amount of the ransom was unjustified. Someone has already tried to bargain. Nia noticed how, taking advantage of everyone's confusion, the Sheriff of Guldorand barely turned his head, whispering to the dark green cloaked elven figure behind him. Nia blinked; the figure disappeared; the sheriff looked straight ahead again as if nothing had happened.
Greenfield sighed, stood up, took out a gun from under his desk and shot at the ceiling. A ringing silence filled the room. A small chunk of lime landed measuredly on the heads of the Accords to the accompaniment of crumbling bricks.
The Dwarf noted how the Doctor clung to her title. "The girl must have spent years at the Zhenta-folk Medical Academy, eh? She would not have allowed herself to be called simply MISS," he thought to himself, not bothering to pay attention to the people trying to take his weapon from him.
"Listen, DOCTOR Coincidence," he began soothingly. "It's not that we turned down your very sensible offer, but why do you need such a sum at all? There must be things much more interesting to you than gold" the dwarf was clearly cunning. "Tell us, what do you really want, lass"
A faint shudder ran across the Doctor's face. "What I desire, you and your kind cannot give," she replied dryly. The Doctor closed her shining eyes for a moment, visibly lowering the level of light in the hall. When the lighting again began to exceed the normal, steel notes were heard in the Doctor's voice: "You have. One. Week," she pinned the leaders of the settlements. "In seven days either I get the gold, or I'll take your whole world from you!"
"Moradin is my witness and my judge, - I wanted to settle things in a good way," the thane slowly straightened up and akimbo. "We have a local joke here," he began calmly. "Can a ram eat ten haystacks at a time?" he looked around the room rhetorically for an answer. "Of course he can, but who will give them to him?" he laughed shortly and loudly, looking directly into the eyes of the Doctor, who, judging by the changed color of her face, was about to burst into flames. "You won't get a coin, not a sin'le gem from us! How do you like that, MISSY?!" he roared and repeatedly fired at the illusion.
When the ripples on the surface of the Doctor's phantom ceased, her face had already returned to its usual pale hue. "So you have chosen death," came the Doctor's measured words. The beast in her arms snorted arrogantly. Then the mirage faded.
Dr. Coincidence exhaled loudly. Enthusiastic applause came from all sides. Many got up from their seats and already began to gather around their savior.
The Doctor raised her hand asking for silence. "Friends, comrades, remember this day, for it marks our victory!" she said solemnly, but nevertheless coldly. "And now," she pointed to the platform with the portal behind them, "I ask you all to be my guests. This ley will take you to my Laboratory. There we will begin the practical part of OUR plan," she summed up a little more enthusiastically.
Convinced that the cheering crowd was following its intended course, the Doctor turned to face the Treasurer, who appeared to be about to rush out of the room.
"I'll ask you to stay, my slippery friend," she growled low, forcibly turning him around with a single hand. "Who do you think you are? Greedy, puny, how did you even become the leader of your House? We still wouldn't stop what we started, but we could at the same time rob those dupes!" At these words, the Doctor's pet, nestled comfortably on her chest, squinted accusingly at the Treasurer.
She spat on the floor in annoyance, then pulled him close to her face. "Decide already - you are either with us or against us!" The badger hissed sharply, echoing the tone of his mistress. The Treasurer lowered his eyes, staring in horror at the wild animal.
"My eyes. Are. Up. Here," she strictly roused him.
"Make sure there's no trace," Doctor then nodded towards the room with the predatory fish, finally releasing the camisole of the purple-faced Treasurer. "And then go back to the lab, we have a lot of work to do," Dr. Coincidence said a little more calmly.
The half-orc swallowed nervously.
"Yes, Doctor," was all the Treasurer could manage.
***
"Wait, is that all? But what happened to Kitara and Hald? Were they eaten or not? You promised what you would say in the next chapter!"
Well, I didn't mention exactly the NEXT chapter, and yet if you really want to see Kitara and Hald again, you'll have to pay me... with your attention to Chapter V of the story!

The Monthly Catch - Tropical Mossfin, Kelpy Quandry
I hear a lot of people wondering where the best places to come across kelp are, as it has some value in cooking various tasty things. As most know, kelp grows in water, often in the ocean and sometimes in fresh water as well. And sometimes it gets snagged on your hook.
There is also a little known fish called the Tropical Mossfin which has green and kelp like fins. These fins can be harvested, if one is deft with a knife, and then can be used just like regular kelp. Neat!
By the name, it's clear that these watery creatures live in warmer areas. In fact, I myself have caught some of these on the jungle coasts around the Crows Nest.
Once again, I asked our local fishing expert, Haster the Fishmonger, for some insight into these peculiar pisceans.
He had this to say;
"Oy nah, yeah. Them be a right trek to catch, from 'ere anyway. Sure ya can catch 'em in the warm coastal waters. But jus' inland there's a nice swampy pool. Locals call it the Gulch. Loads o' the Mossfins in there. Jus' watch out fer lizard folk."
So there you have it, dear readers, the best place to catch some kelpy fish. Thankfully there are no kelpies on Arelith.
Day 23, Month 12 (Nightal), 177 AR

BREAKING NEWS: AMN RESPONDS TO WATERDHAVIAN NAVY
As many of you may have already seen, the Waterdhavian Navy has arrived in the fortress city of Guldorand. A fleet of twenty-five ships, five or six ship-of-the-lines, and two thousand soldiers are currently stationed in the city. Admiral Hornwynd of the Lords' Alliance claims that the force is only present to protect Waterdhavian interests along the trade routes to Maztica and to protect the citizens of Guldorand from Amnian aggression.
Our inside source confirms that the Amnian Navy is sending Admiral Roman Talazar with a fleet to size in response to the perceived aggression of the Lords' Alliance. Admiral Talazar is the prot g of Admiral Hern n, who sailed the Grand Ballena in the attack against Wharftown. The Amnian Council is also in direct contact with General Cordell of Maztica in hopes of bringing the Golden Legion, numbering at over six hundred legionnaires, to the Arelith isles as reinforcements.
Attempts at diplomacy have come to a standstill as the Lords' Alliance continues to ignore the diplomatic envoy sent from Amn. Additionally, an attempted breaking and entering of the Ambassador's quarters in the Amnian Embassy has taken place only a few nights prior. While the perpetrator is unknown and still at large, our inside source states that Admiral Hornwynd's reputation precedes him as a man who "gets the job done, come what way".
The arrival of the Lords' Alliance fleet is seen as an implicit threat to Amnian trade routes and an attempt to make a statement of force -- or war. The Arelith isles are seen as an important trade route as without the isles, any voyage from the Sword Coast to Maztica would be tenfold more dangerous and costly. As the Lords' Alliance had almost single-handedly funded the entirety of Guldorand during it's settlement, this is believed to be an agenda that has long been in the works, with the recent conflict in Maztica only serving as a farce to hide hostile intentions.
It is also believed that the Iron Throne will likely ally with the Waterdhavian Navy to protect interests in the city while the current stance of the Merchant Navy, who captains the flagship of Guldorand, is currently unknown. Finally, to end this report, the Press Gang leaves an excerpt from the interview with our inside source.
A: "... Do you think something like Wharftown will happen again?"
I: "... If you'd ask me that question last time we spoke I'd laugh it off as fear-mongerin'. Now? ...I ain't laughin'."

The Press Gang 1/12/177
Hello, everyone! It's Chief Editor Alter Kim here with the latest issue of the Press Gang! Now, this issue may have been published a bit early but that's because the news we have for you today is that much more important. As some of you may have heard, there has been a massacre of New-Waterhavian settlers in Maztica, with over two hundred dead. You might be wondering what that has to do with the people of Arelith, but the reprecussions of this is something the entirety of the isles will soon feel. Read more about it in "Waterdeep Navy Sails for Arelith"!
Additionally, we have a submission by a concerned individual regarding the recent changes to the public space of the Cordor town square that many of the public seems to agree with. We also have an interview with our very own Gwendolyn Gallowmere, the magistrate of Cordor, and "Lady Silverhair" a drowess and follower of Eilistraee. Last but not least, we have the third chapter of "From Cordor with Love" by our lovely "Wildarse" and a new article on the rare Blink Carp!

Day 1, Month 12 (Nightal), 177 AR
Alter Kim
Recently, there have been news that a community of New-Waterdavian settlers in Maztica were found dead with over two hundred Waterdavians killed in the bloody massacre. Open Lord Piergerion of the Lord's Alliance of Waterdeep has vowed that justice will be done upon the responsible once found. But the truth of the matter is that the city of Waterdeep is already fully aware of who is responsible for the attack. According to an inside source, this conflict is the latest in the territorial dispute of Waterdeep attempting to force their way into Amnian-held colonies. The Waterdavian people have been rallying up the Lord's Alliance for retaliation and the inside source confirms that the city is sending a huge part of their navy to the Arelith isles.
While this may seem inconsequential, the act has many ramifications throughout the isles. Half of the Founder's Council of Guldorand are representatives from the Lord's Alliance of Waterdeep and home to the Iron Throne, who owns the largest naval fleet around the Arelith isles at over twenty ships. On the other hand, the city of Cordor is allied with the nation of Amn and lacks any official naval force with the Leviathan rarely leaving the docks. Additionally, our inside source confirms that the Amnian naval forces' presence is nowhere as prominent as it had been in the past. Tensions have been high between the city of Waterdeep and the nation of Amn, and there are even whispers that war may break out with the isles of Arelith as the battlefield.

The Loss of Public Space
As many of the people of Cordor may have noticed already, on the tenth day of Uktar the furnishings of Cordor square had all been taken away. The only thing left behind was a sign promoting the Rivorndir mystery ball and a sign by Lady Hannah Stormwind. Lady Stormwind stated that she had been tasked with the reorganization of the public space and had removed all of the furnishings to the corner of the barracks. She plans to have eight statues built to decorate the public square instead, one of the king, one of Cordoria, and six of "emotions or virtues".
Now, I am all for the occasional re-organization of the square. No one wants the public space to be cluttered with outdated signs and whatnot. But to take every furnishing, some that have been donated to help the people of Cordor and newcomer adventurers alike, to make room for eight statues seems a bit too much. And if reorganizing the public space is the goal, shouldn't public opinion be an important factor of the project as well?
Already, I've seen many people complain about the removal of the tent stall that acted as the only protection against the rain in the square. The chair and desk that has been the site of many business deals and guard recruitment has gone missing as well. Not only that, signs and boards belonging to the Trade Ministry have been taken by Lady Stormwind as well. While the idea behind the renovation is respectable, the execution is a bit... sloppy.
Also, Lady Stormwind is a new recruit to the guards and a newcomer to the city. While I applaud her desire to better the city and her initiative in proposing the changes, I wonder if she alone is the best fit for this task. Many of the furnishings that were taken have quite the history and attachment to many people that someone new to the city would not understand. The aforementioned chair and desk was placed by one of the previous chancellors and have remained in place for over a year. The stall was the site of the Goldenhorn business, one of the most prominent businesses in aiding newcomers and veterans alike.
Instead, the space is to be taken by statues. I do have to wonder, is that really the best use of the public space? Statues are nice and all but lack a functional purpose to aid the public. Wouldn't the city hall or the museum be a better spot for these statues? Instead of barrels offering supplies to adventurers, locations for businesses, and shelter from the rain, are we to stand about in the square looking at statues?
But I've written enough. I think many people share my sentiment. Ask around and you'll hear the same from many. I hope the government takes this chance to try and ascertain what the public wants before attempting to implement any drastic changes. If any of you agree or disagree and wish to share your sentiments, please contact the Chief Editor, Alter Kim, and he will let me know!

An Interview with Gwendolyn Gallowmere
Month 5, Day 2, 177 AR
A: "So Miss Gwen, thanks for agreeing to be interviewed today! Is there any particular reason you accepted?"
G: "Oh-Uh. Nope."
A: "Heh, well thank you anyways. So, you act as the legal aide to the Justiciar. Is there any particular reason you wanted the job?"
G: "When I first got here, there was a guy murdering people, right? That OV guy. Well, he dropped two bodies on me while I was returning from writ-work, and the guard thought I was involved and they got real mad and angry at me. Suppose when I heard there was a job open, I wanted to make sure innocent people weren't getting blamed for things like that."
A: "So you're looking out for the little guy... figuratively speaking."
G: "Sorta. Kinda. I also firmly believe that people who do commit wrong-doings should be punished properly. And I get to learn and see all sorts about the history of the city, that's a bonus."
A: "I was there when you recited the legal codes to Thomas to prove your worth. I have to say it was quite impressive. Did you spend a lot of time reading legal codes even before becoming an aide?"
G: "Yep! I remember everything as it happened, Nana said it was a gift. So learning the written word is really easy when there's a bookshelf full of laws. And, y'know. Ignorance of the law isn't an excuse to break it, which happens often.."
A: "That must be a very useful gift in your current occupation. What about your previous occupation? What did you do before becoming a legal aide?"
G: "Freelance Clown, duh- Traveled with my family performing, came here alone because Nana said it was a good place to learn more."
A: "Do you ever miss your old job?"
G: "Still do it, just don't do it with my pin on."
A: "Ah, really? You must be busy with two different occupations."
G: "Mhm, took a job with the Clover. Gonna perform there sometimes. I miss doing it constantly, but it really takes a considerable amount of effort to appear unphased and optimistic constantly."
A: ?What about when you're not working as a legal aide or elsewhere? Is there anything you like to do in your free time?"
G: "Hm, no, don't think so. Most of my free time is spent reading the history of the isles. Sometimes I walk in nature, but that's about it."
A: "What about food and drink? Is there any particular food or drink you like to enjoy when things get tiring for you?"
G: "Oh, I'm super boring. There's nothing better than simple spring water. But food, I don't know about that one."
A: "You don't have a type of food you like? Maybe a childhood dish or something new you tried?"
G: "I'll eat anything, couldn't be fussy in Chondalwood. If we were eating grubs and worms for dinner, that's what we got."
A: "Can you tell me a bit about Chondalwood? I'm somewhat of a newcomer from the far east so I'm not too familiar with the place."
G: "Oh, it's a real big forest in the interior of Faerun. Full of satyrs and treants and wild elves. See, my Nana is a Ghostwise, so she was born there proper. I don't really know what a Ghostwise is, but I know I'm not one."
A: "You mentioned your Nana quite a few times. She must be someone important to you. Can you tell us a bit about her?"
G: "Mhm, she's super important! She was a councilor, and she was the best shadow dancer I've ever seen!"
A: "And what about friends? Do you have someone you consider as your closest friend? Someone who has always been by your side?"
G: "Oh, no. Not really. I guess, people here are friendly.. I guess Flamma is a friend, he's real nice to me always for no reason. Think I put some people off, they take everything I say too seriously."
A: "Hmm, really? Maybe the reputation of being a legal aide can be intimidating for some. Do you feel people treat you differently since you joined?"
G: "No, don't think so. Maybe that's half the problem, they don't get that Mischief is just an act. It's all just jokes, right? I don't actually think hins are all shoeless weirdos, but it's funny to say it. And when that kinda joke comes directly from a hin? That's like, a double punchline."
A: "I get what you mean. Tell us about Gwen then. If you had to describe Gwen in three words, what would it be?"
G: "Three words? Uh- Sarcastic. Diligent? Aaand.. Studious."
A: "Now let me ask you a hypothetical question. If you had to describe an ideal day, what would the day be like for you?"
G: "Oh, any day that a carnival is going is the ideal day. The music and the fun and the laughter, nothing beats that."
A: "Is there any particular attraction you like most?
G: "I'm usually performing at those, so I'm biased to say the stage."
A: "Let's talk about the future now. So currently you work as a legal aide and performer. Are you content with where you are right now or is there a bigger position that you are aiming for?"
G: "It'd be nice to keep working and become a full fledged Magistrate. But I'm pretty content with my station."
A: "What about your legacy? In times to come, what would you like to be remembered for most?"
G: "Ooh, a legacy? No, don't really think about that. I've no illusions about myself, I'm more than likely going to be forgotten by time, that's fine with me. Oh, I'd also like to work with the King directly, to get that kinda station would be both memorable AND exciting."
A: "Ha, I don't think that's something that could be forgotten. But every big thing starts small! Let's take a peek into the daily routine of Gwen-"
A: "When you wake up, do you have a morning routine you like to follow?"
G: "Well, skipping over boring things like washing and eating, I usually head straight to the library first thing. I can normally find a book for studying, then I see if Thomas or the Guards need anything."
A: "Do you study a book a day?"
G: "Usually, yeah."
A: "What's today's book of study then?"
G: "An Elven Phrasebook. Likely to be my book for a while, at least until I learn the language."
A: "Any particular reason you chose to learn Elven?"
G: "Seems to be one of the most spoken languages here, and considering how many wild elves I know back home, it makes sense to learn it properly."
A: "And what about a bedtime routine? Anything you like to do to wind down for the day?"
G: "Usually offer a prayer to Brandobaris, and thank Tymora for another fortunate day."
A: "Well, that's pretty much all the questions I have for you today. Before we end though, is there anything you would like to say to the readers?"
G: "Hm. I don't think so. I haven't got much in the way of grand statements, maybe just, there's nothing wrong with not being good at everything. Sometimes it's best to just be comfortable with yourself, most things kinda fall into place when you think like that."
A: "Well, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed today. I think a lot of people would be interested in reading about you!"

An Interview with Lady Silverhair
A: "Tell me about yourself Lady Silverhair. Or whatever parts you are comfortable sharing with our readers."
S: "Please understand this is difficult to talk about."
A: "Of course. Whatever you feel safe talking about."
S: "I grew up in a small village. I won't say where exactly, but life was cruel. If you were not a priestess, you were nearly just a slave. I helped my mother clean the kitchens, and halls of one of the Higher Houses in the town. It was a simple life though I loved my family and working. However when my Mother accidently misspoke to one of the priestesses, they killed her. On the spot. No, warning, no emotion. I was left there, standing in shock. The priestess then knelt beside me and told me: 'Lolth be praised.' Lolth be praised? As if she was doing me a service.."
A: "Is this a common occurrence in the Underdark?"
S: "Yes. If you're not a priestess of at least equal standing, your life is forfeit as seen fit. I was made to clean up the mess that was left.. 'It makes you stronger, hardens your heart,' they told me... But I will never be like them. I collected what few belongings I had left, then ran away. I remember wandering the Underdark for what felt like cycles... almost getting eaten a few times because of my curious nature. Eventually I would be saved by a drow, his name was Haddal. He asked what I was doing all by myself, wandering aimlessly. I had told him what happened, and that I would never be like them. And instead of slaying me, he offered me a hand and asked if I had heard of the Dark Maiden."
S: "He would train me. Taught me how to fight. How to survive on my own. The teachings of the dancing lady. And when I was old enough, he brought me to the surface. It was a day I will never forget. Looking up and seeing the night sky. How green the leaves were. The singing of the birds... it felt almost nonexistent. He told me not to wander too far, but I did not listen. I was enthralled. A place not touched by the spider queen. A place of peace, of love. I wandered too far from Haddal and accidentally stumbled onto the open road. A caravan stopped, seeing me. Throwing things and brandishing a blade calling me drow-filth."
S: "I tried to state my intentions however no one can trust the word of a drow. They attacked me... and I had to wound two of them before I fled. I found Haddal and cried. He lectured me on straying too far. But he told me one day we will be welcomed on the surface. Free as every other race. Human, elf, halfling. We just have to wait, and let them know we are out there."
A: "And that's why you sought me?"
S: "Yes, we have to let them know that not each of us are monsters. That we can be redeemed. I'm not sure how many will believe you, or me. They might even call you a sympathizer or a fool and that I am trying to trick you. But as long as one person is given hope, we have done something today."
A: "And what became of Haddal?"
S: "Years later, Haddal would be killed trying to free more people like me. I promised I would carry on his work."
A: "I see. I'm sorry. Do you carry on his work alone or are there others like you?"
S: "For now... it's just me. My position is dangerous, but I feel maybe someday I can turn some of the people close to me to Eilistraee."
A: "I hope this can help you in your goals. It is a noble goal."
S: "Thank you. I wish more people were as open minded as you. But I feel it will be many cycles before anything might ever be hoped to change."

09:00 PM
"Why did you bring them here!?" the Treasurer immediately jumped up from his seat. In response, fragments of unintelligible explanations came from the orcs. No one seemed to be listening to them though. The Treasurer immediately caught himself and mumbled: "I beg your pardon, Doctor." He gestured with his hand, suggesting she take matters into her own hands. However, he was clearly in no hurry to get back down.
Dr. Coincidence looked sternly at the Treasurer. She noted to herself that he was expecting intruders, but didn't bother to warn her. "Treasurer, where are your manners?" she reproached him with mock politeness. Then turned her attention to the uninvited guests.
"Well, well, well. Just look at who decided to personally congratulate me on my birthday!" quipped the Doctor when, at her gesture, the captives were brought closer to the table. "Mister Chadley!" she answered her own question, faking a smile. "And...?" She looked pointedly at Kitara.
"I am Kitara Twinetall," the firbolg replied. She made a restrained curtsy, to which Hald snorted approvingly.
"Of course, Kitara, yes," she nodded. "It's nice to see a new face in our... environment," the Doctor picked the right word to which Hald threw a meaningful look at Kitara. Kitara began to feel like she was being played hard.
Awkward thoughts began to spin in the Doctor's head: "How long did it take to plan this daring invasion? They must have come a long way and taken incredible risks to get here! It must be a shame to fall into a trap after so much effort. It would be simply unfair to just shoot them, right? RIGHT?"
"I see something didn't go according to the plan?" she asked with the casual intonation of a badger crouching in the tall grass, preparing to jump.
"Actually, everything is going as planned," Hald answered confidently. "In a moment we will get free from these chains and deal with all of you at once." At those words some of the outer chairs tried to look behind him to make sure the bindings were secure.
The Doctor peered into the imperturbable faces of her captives. The moral dilemma tormented her mind mercilessly: "They are so good! They deserve much MORE..." Looking for a confirmation, she glanced at the Treasurer. The Treasurer bored her with his piggy eyes in response, and seemed to clearly understand what she was thinking. The slight shaking of his head was meant to convey a simple message to her: "Doctor, please no! No! NOOOO!"
She shook her head. "Ha! Anyway, what does this orc understand about serious business?" she thought and then asked rhetorically: "Oh, I see you like humor, Mister Chadley?". "I also have a few tricks in store," she announced excitedly. "Get them to the water!" she called to the half-orcs, pointing in the direction of a nearby hall with a large water tank in the center. A suspended platform was located directly above the water.
"Release the banite monk sharks!" shouted Dr. Coincidence and added leisurely, breaking into a smile and twisting a lock of her red hair on the pinky of her right hand as the prisoners were brought closer to the water: "Mister Chadley, you will notice that all the sharks have rays of light coming from their eyes. I figure every creature deserves a well lit meal!"
"Ahem-ahem-ahem," immediately came the sound from the Treasurer, who a moment later had already pulled his chair up to the Doctor's throne, "Doctor Coincidence, it is about the sharks ..."
Moving even closer, he began to whisper: "While you were busy at the clinic, the Soulhaven included monk sharks in the list of sacred animals. We tried to get some, but it would have taken months to clear up the red tape," he said with an expression of painful annoyance on his face, after which he hurried to take his place.
Those sitting at the tables watched as the Doctor listened attentively to the Treasurer, nodded understandingly, and then burst out:
"You know, I have one simple request," she addressed the assembly with deliberate patience, "and that is to have sharks with frickin red glowing eyes! Now evidently my half-orc colleague informs me that it cannot be done!" Then, after a deep sigh, she turned to the Treasurer and, with the calmness of a dire badger who had just been pulled by the tail, inquired: "What do we have?"
"Salmon," replied the Treasurer with the face of a man who always performed his duties flawlessly and only this time he stumbled once. OBVIOUSLY it was not his mistake, but the inaccuracy of the problem statement on the part of the customer.
For a long minute the Doctor stared into space in front of her. Not a single muscle moved in her face. The hall fell into a thunderous silence, through which those sitting closest to the room with the failed sharks could hear someone's loud whisper: "What have you got us into, Hald?! What is going on here?"
Badger sneezed indignantly.
"Ri-ight," the Doctor drawled, summing up the situation.
"They are fiendish salmon," the Treasurer made a desperate attempt, "delivered from the Iron Citadel!"
"Really?" The Doctor decided to take pity on the half-orc: "Are they fiend-pacted?"
"Absolutely!" the Treasurer said confidently with an inner cry, clutching at the saving straw with both hands and feet.
"That's a start. Alright," she spread her hands compromisingly. Then she turned to the three orcs, who had already chained the captives to the pole that held the platform to the ceiling: "Begin the unnecessarily slow-moving dipping mechanism!"
One of the trio of orcs holding the captives at gunpoint pulled a lever beside him. A trapdoor slid open in the floor directly below the orc next to him. There was a receding orcish cry of "Wrong lever!", a splash, the sounds of crocodiles, then the hatch closed.
"Why do we even have THAT lever?" Dr. Coincidence clarified with the Treasurer with displeasure. However, such a trifle could no longer spoil her mood.
"Oh," was all the delinquent orc managed to squeeze out. At his own risk, he pulled another lever. Luckily for him, the platform with Hald and Kitara began to slowly approach the surface of the water, which had already begun to show fish activity. Kitara looked around restlessly, trying to assess the strength of the chains along the way. Hald, for his part, took a leisurely look around the platform, then watched the diabolic looking fish splashing wildly beneath it. Then he whispered to Kitara, "Do you still trust me?" In response, Kitara lifted her leg slightly to give him a painful kick, but then suddenly whispered cheerfully instead: "Yes!" She put her leg back on the platform. "Blum-bluma-blama-fuz!" the platform made an agonizing metallic sound in response. Hald's face showed the smile of a man who enjoys his work. He turned his proud chin towards Dr. Coincidence and directed his gaze directly into her eyes.
"Close the gates!" the Doctor shouted, catching Hald's eye. "Goodbye, Mister Chadley!" she shouted at last. She gave the Treasurer a triumphant look, as if to say to him: "Watch and learn! This is how you deal with your arch-enemies!" The Treasurer tried to object to what was happening, but quickly realized that he was not being heard. Dr. Coincidence was already deep in her thoughts.
Somewhere in the depths of the walls, powerful mechanisms began to work. The Doctor and Hald continued to look at each other.
"What a man ..." The Doctor said voluptuously when the doors were almost closed. A little louder than she expected, which caught the Treasurer's puzzled look, who managed to hear the words over the noise of the closing mechanisms.
The gates closed.

Is this the end? Will Hald and Kitara become food for the fish? Common! Wildarse is not THAT wild. She can't kill the main characters of the story like this, right? RIGHT? You know where to find the answer!
Day 6, Month 10 (Marpenoth (Leafall)), 177 AR

The Monthly Catch - Blink Carp; Hubris of the Arcane
In the past year a strange phenomenon has rippled through the fishing world, a new species of fish has appeared in and around Arelith. The Blink Carp, recognized by it's bright blue scales and greenish back stripes, it has been found almost everywhere.
This fish has an unnatural penchant for teleporting when it senses danger giving it a reputation as the bane of rookie anglers and non fishing folk alike. Some specimens are rumoured contain peculiar organs that can be used in the place of spell components. Townsfolk trade stories of fish appearing out of thin air only to flop about causing havoc in their homes, breaking pottery, knocking things over and causing a racket in the middle of the night, only to teleport away soon after.
Some investigative research has lead me to believe that the ones responsible for this locomantic piscine menace were a group of wizards who were trying to clean the isle of the thaumic waste contaminating some waterways. The waterways are indeed less thaumically contaminated these days, but as is often the case, the wizards did not stop to consider the potential consequences of their otherwise goodly actions.
I reached out to Archmage Yusmena concerning the matter, she declined to comment. So again, I asked our local fishing expert, Haster the Fishmonger, for some insight into the matter.
He had this to say;
"Oy nah, yeah. They're tricky blighters for sure. If'n ya can get a runic hook they'll come right up, easy as pie. Some magicky adventurin' sort once told me that ya can ward the area too. Ain't really sure what 'e meant though."
So there you have it, dear readers, the secrets of the elusive Blink Carp revealed.
Happy fishing!

Breaking news: Kinslayer in the streets of Cordor!
Read all about it! A kinslayer who has been heard confessing to the murder of his own father is sheltered in the city of Cordor, and lives in this very Cordorian Press building!
The name of this murderer? Dala!
He can be identified by his copper red hair and unusually masculine (for an elf!) visage. He owns a shop opposite the Flaming Lotus, and has been seen around the area. Beware, citizens and visitors!
Has this news been supressed by the Cordorian government? Why is this creature allowed to remain in this very building, a prime piece of real estate? Well, because this man is known (and is friendly with!) the Chancellor of Cordor, Ginny Fairlen. Is Ginny covering up this news? Who else knows about this and is covering up this news?
This reporter has knowledge on a member of the noble house Rivorndir aware of this situation! So clearly, this situation is more widely known. The one person who attempted to bring this situation to the attention of Justicar Thomas Castemont, in the Justice Ministery was exiled immediately, one Anna Shadowsight! A person who apparently has mysteriously disappeared!
Will justice be done? Or will the Cordor Press be complicit with a coverup?
The people need to know!

Dracoliches Attack Cordor Graveyard!
On Day 15, Month 10, 177 AR, the Government District of Cordor experienced a sudden and violent shaking of the ground. With no Guards present, Sir Xalden Grantz and Miss Catherine took lead in evacuating noncombatants to the Nomad. Shortly afterwards, a rider of the Royal Cavalry emerged from the Royal Palace, bearing a message that cultists had infiltrated the city and desecrated the graveyard. They sought able bodied individuals to help assist with the reconsecration. Volunteers split into two teams to secure both the city and the graveyard before regrouping in the graveyard to fight hordes of undead that had been raised.
Sir Storm Nightwind led the attempt to perform the Hallowed Rest ritual, aided by two others whose names are currently unknown, but the numbers of the undead were too numerous and the ritual failed. Sir Lefric Ruston and Sir Minto Fuzzypaw then soon arrived with members of the Hawkin. Sir Minto took charge of the ritual, allowing Sir Storm to take to the defense. But when the ritual neared completion, nearly a dozen Dracoliches alighted onto the graveyard grounds while undead continued to pour from the crypts and rise from the dirt. An insurmountable feeling of dread filled the air as a colossal abyssal fiend emerged from the main crypt, pushing the volunteer forces back. Sir Xalden rallied his horse and charged it immediately, followed by many of the volunteer forces. Eventually, the fiend was slain and the undead were put to rest as the graveyard was once more consecrated.
From there, leadership was deferred to Sir Efren, the new caretaker of the cemetery and crypts. Groups were formed to investigate the crypts and tombs in the graveyard, eventually reconvening in the main crypt. Investigation found the casket of Dame Arael Laceflower disturbed. While the body was still present and untouched, the casket had been clearly broken into. For those unfamiliar with the name, Dame Arael was the High Priestess of Cordor many years ago when the Sword of Benwick was still present. Speculation leads to believe that this incident may be related in regards to the event that occurred at Light Keep recently. If anyone has further information regarding the connection between the attack on the graveyards and the events at Light Keep, please contact the Press Gang!

An Interview with Ginny Rivorndir
Month 4, Day 22, 177 AR
A: "So, Lady Ginny, thank you for agreeing to being interviewed today. Is there any reason in particular you accepted the interview?"
G: "Ah well, a few. Primarily, it's part of the job to make myself available for such. I try to be approachable for everyone and... I think this sort of thing helps with that. And I'll also admit I enjoy this sort of thing, so there's a little bit of that too."
A: "Do you feel that many people see you more for your position than you as an individual?"
G: "Mh, it depends on who I reckon. But yes, I think that's true for the majority of people."
A: "Being a Chancellor must be a full time position even when you are not in the office. But when you have the chance, is there any specific hobby or interest you like to pursue?"
G: "Ah, I play the harp, though I'm definitely nothing special, most bards'd be insulted if I called myself a musician. I also quite like reading, specifically but not limited to topics of philosophy. Additionally, interior design, poetry and sailing. Though that last one is my former job turned into a hobby I suppose."
A: "You were a sailor before you entered the office?"
G: "Ah, of course. You're a somewhat recent arrival I believe? Or at least weren't in Cordor during most of 176?"
A: "Yes, I arrived on the first day of the third month of 177 AR."
G: "I was Captain of the Cordor Navy before Justiciar Rillie Sauer under then-chancellor Najih tried me for treason."
A: "Tried for treason? Is that something you can speak more on?"
G: "I could speak on it for a long time. It might take up an entire interview. Would you like the very brief short version, or would you like to deep-dive a little?"
A: "Mm, it is up to you. This is your interview so whatever you wish to share with our readers."
G: "Then I will say that myself and mister Ezykial were accused of treason because we'd had some contact with enemies of Cordor. We were eventually acquitted... But only after Najih's government essentially imploded. You need only look back a few issues of the press to read the accounts of the ordeal, as detailed by Miss Mai. Two ministers resigned. The chancellor's aide resigned. Almost the entire guard resigned. The entire Cordor Navy resigned."
A: "Sounds like quite the political upheaval."
G: "Certainly was. But ah, I should not deep dive here and now. Miss Mai has already done that, 'tis available to readers still. Most people saw it for what it was... a political move to silence Ezykial."
A: "But now you are the Chancellor. A duty with quite the responsibility. Do you miss having the time to play the harp and go sailing?"
G: "Ah, that's a common misconception. I do find the time for such, Certainly, sometimes I work day and night and have to forgo proper sleep, but... I consider such a failure of proper management and leadership. When I am doing my job well, others are empowered to do theirs with minimal actual involvement of myself."
A: "Ah, that sounds efficient. More hands mean less work as the old saying goes."
G: "Mh, indeed. If I had to pass on any advice to future chancellors it would be... delegate, delegate, delegate."
A: "You mentioned you would occasionally give up proper sleep for your duties. But, when possible, do you have a bedtime routine you like to follow?"
G: "Ah, admittedly between the sustenance spell and the nature of different people's availability and such... I don't really have a pre-set bedtime or routine, no. I do tend to put away my staff and cloak at home though, when I'm not expecting guests! So that might count.."
A: "Mm, what about a morning routine when you awake? Do you have a few moments to yourself before you dive into your work?"
G: "Yes indeed. I usually have some tea, wash, do my hair, nails, and then spend some time going through paperwork from the previous day."
A: "I can see that you very much enjoy tea. Is there a particular comfort dish you like to enjoy as well when you have the chance to eat?"
G: "Ah, I'm a bit of a sweet-tooth, really. I'm partial to treats and pastries... But especially chocolate cake."
A: "Ah, I can relate to having a fondness for sweets. What about a place you like to go to recharge after a long day?"
G: "Ah, it's rather dull honestly. My home."
A: "I don't think it's dull at all. Home is home for a reason. But let us dive into some more personal questions about you now. Do you have a dream or goal you wish to one day achieve?"
G: "Oof... A dream or a goal I wish to one day achieve? You're asking me that, a common-born woman, as chancellor of Cordor? The highest function one can attain in this city?"
A: "Well, I believe it is our nature to always wish for more. To fly as close to the sun as we can."
G: "Well, I never pursued this function for myself. I ended up running for chancellor because I genuinely believed there was no one better. When I made the decision to run, Cordor wasn't doing so well. And this city is my home. I care for its people, and I saw no other path forward. To be honest... at this point, I'm not really looking past the chancellorship anymore. I know that once I step back from running the city, I'd like to have children."
A: "Do you regret running for chancellor?"
G: "Regret? No. I don't dwell on the past usually. The 'now' is the only thing we can ever change. I can ill afford to lament the past, or fear the future."
A: "A wise philosophy to have. You mentioned you would like to one day have kids. Do you know how many kids you would want or if you would want your first child to be a son or daughter?"
G: "Oof, as for a number... I think three might be nice, but... we'll see if I've the energy for a second after the first, yeah? As for a son or a daughter. No preference."
A: "And speaking of your future, what do you wish your legacy to be one day? What do you hope people will remember you for in the future? Your time as a Chancellor? Your deeds?"
G: "I would hope they remember me for rebuilding Cordor. Specifically my efforts other than the military and the Justice Department. The Cordor Academy, the press, the museum, the Lotus, the Nomad, the furnishing of various government buildings, the establishment of better ties with Brogendenstein... Among other things."
A: "I think I speak for many of our readers when I say that the city has done well under your leadership. As a newcomer myself, the city has been open to people like I and has provided us many opportunities."
G: "Mhm. That has been my goal. To shift the focus away from the military a little. And I dare say, even the military has benefited from this approach. In my time on the island I have never seen the Cordor military as competent as it is now."
A: "Once you leave the office, do you have any ideas of what you would like to do? Besides raising a family of course."
G: "I expect I'll be in office a while longer to be honest, I don't see another candidate on the rise, and I don't see support for my government wavering. Beyond that, I will do what my new family expects of me. My talents are in government, strategy, diplomacy, and education, that sort of thing... so, I'd expect something along those lines."
A: "Being a member of the Rivorndirs comes with quite the baggage."
G: "It does."
A: "How are you handling it so far?"
G: "Ah... I have a great mentor."
A: "Your husband?"
G: "Actually, my uncle, Khara'gos."
A: "He's taught you how to deal with the responsibility of being a Rivorndir?"
G: "Among other things. I have yet to go through the rites of Lady Siamorphe's divine right. Until I do that, I am noble in name only."
A: "How has the public reacted to your marriage with Sir Dax Rivorndir? The Rivorndirs are a very powerful and influential House in Cordor. Has there been any dissent about you becoming a member of such a house?"
G: "Well, Sencliff did launch a raid on my wedding. But from within Cordor? Not really, no."
A: "Well, I think that is all the time that we have today! As we end this interview, Is there anything you would like to tell our readers?"
G: "I'd like to remind everyone that my doors are ever open to advice, feedback, and yes, even complaints. Many folk hide themselves behind anonymity and take to the boards. To all those people I would say... talk to me. I will listen. I may not always agree... But I'll hear you and consider what you have to say. I can however not debate with anonymous posters on the board. Speak to me as a person, and I will treat you as one in turn."
A: "And final question, Lady Ginny. If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?"
G: "One word? I don't know. I don't think I could describe myself in one word."
A: "Think of it as a challenge, then. Maybe a quality of yourself you are proud most of or something to describe the hardships you've been through."
G: "Alright then, fine. As imperfect as it may be... A rock."
A: "A rock. Any particular reason why?"
G: "Stability, both for myself and for others. You may think that's a political answer, but I've always sought to provide that for people, for my friends, And I've always sought to be... stable. Long before I even considered running for office."
A: "Well thank you again for agreeing to this interview Lady Ginny. I think many people will be interested in learning more about you as a person rather than your reputation."
G: "Thank you for offering me the opportunity, mister Alter."

Alter Kim
An Interview with Maknold
A: "So, tell me Mister Maknold. Why were you interested in being interviewed for the Press Gang?"
M: "Believes such would be a chance to spread knowledge of kin and the creator."
A: "I will admit, I do not know much of your kind. Can you give us a little introduction to yourself?"
M: "Of course. This one is a linguist, master tailor, and seeker of knowledge of all that share the blood of Io."
A: "Io? Is Io the creator of all kobolds?"
M: "Yes, Io is the one that is responsible for these ones' creation. Is the creator of all dragons, and cares for such and those that share those ones' blood."
A: "I have met some of those with dragon blood on the Surface. Do you share a kinship with them, despite the conflict between the Surface and the Underdark?"
M: "This one does, though others amongst this one's kin may not share such a view, but Io loves all kin regardless of lineage as all are that one's children. And as this one is a kobold, this one must seek to be worthy of the Ninefold's love, as these ones were the first kin of dragons to share that one's blood."
A: "Ninefold? Can you explain more about this Ninefold?"
M: "Oh, the Ninefold is simply a title for Io. Similar to how Bahamut is known as the platinum one."
A: "Ah, I see. And tell me more about your kin. The only information I have heard about your kin is that you are an industrious people."
M: "Well, that one has been informed accurately to such, but this one can elaborate to the why of such. It is fundamentally how these ones pray at the end of the cycle, for it is the reason that the Ninefold gave the first of the dragons the means to influence the world when all of the Ninefold's first children were still gods. Such gave those ones that knowledge so that those ones could build those ones' lairs and those ones' hoards, and such those ones did. And this one isn't afraid to say these ones were and still are vithing good at it."
A: "Do you and your kin do anything else to worship Io? Any particular rituals or offerings you give to the Ninefold?"
M: "Well, admits not many of this one kin worship the Ninefold, as many kin in Andunor worship others of the pantheon, and many chose to honor Kurtulmak."
A: "How does this Kurtulmak differ from Io?"
M: "Well, Kurtulmak is a kobold as opposed to a dragon, and as such a mortal before the Ninefold made such a god. Kurtulmak was the first of these ones to be made as such."
A: "And does his dogma differ from that of Io's?"
M: "Oh! Vastly different. Whilst the Ninefold does not have any specific dogma, given that one is the creator of all that share dragon's blood, Kurtulmak is quite specific. Such is the one that instructs these ones to mine and offer service and to practice caution when dealing with those that are not kin."
A: "And what is your opinion of Kurtulmak's dogma?"
M: "Personally, this one thinks such has served well in the past to ensure these ones survival, but has kept these ones from claiming a larger place in the world."
A: "I hear that one of the districts is run by your kind, yes?"
M: "Well, such is certainly true, but this one speaks of the wider world. Would ask that one what great cities that this one's kin have? What great monuments can this one's kin claim?"
A: "I can't say I can think of any."
M: "This one's point exactly."
A: "So do you wish for your people to one day live on the Surface?"
M: "Admits this one does not mind to such specifically, but this one longs for a place for kin to call these ones' own. But this one would look forward to the cycle that kin are not treated with such hostility."
A: "Do you think the Surface unfairly judges your people?"
M: "This one does, those ones fear these ones without due course, as these ones often look to defend other kin from attacks when these ones only seek industry."
A: "And what are your opinions about the current state of conflict between the Surface and the Underdark?"
M: "Frankly, this one thinks such is self perpetuating, both seek vindication for the actions undertaken by the other."
A: "Now, let us talk about works and yourself, Mister Maknold. You spoke of great cities and monuments before. Do you have any projects that you are working on currently?"
M: "Admits this one is saving the profits from this one's industry so that this one may eventually invest in such a project."
A: "Any particular plans or ideas for a project?"
M: "Has been thinking of developing a monument for the Ninefold so that all that share the Ninefold's blood may gather."
A: "Hm, I would love to see such a monument. Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers about you or your kin?"
M: "Yes, buy the products of these ones industry, such will not find items of higher quality."
A: "Hah, an excellent opportunity for marketing indeed. And before we end, I do have a question for you. Are you not worried that fellow underdarkers may dislike the fact you agreed to an interview with the Press Gang?"
M: "Thinks some will, others will understand, but this one doubts any would act against this one as such would be an act against the rest of kin."
A: "Well, thank you for agreeing to this interview and I am sure that many of the readers would be interested in reading about you and your kin!"
M: "This one thanks, is sure such will look favorable to this one."

City of Cordor, The Lilting Lotus Social Club
Eleasis 15th, 183 AR
08:00 PM
This evening, a real pandemonium formed in The Lilting Lotus club: luxurious carriages drove up and drove off one after another, leaving behind representatives of the nobility, who, along with simpler people, crowded into the atmosphere of loud, but no less refined music, beautiful dishes and strong drinks. Many citizens of the City of Cordor have made it their top priority to attend Dr. Coincidence's birthday party.
The Doctor herself, however, was nowhere to be seen (which did not prevent idle visitors from drinking and eating in honor of the birthday girl), and some of the important guests, after some time in the main hall, moved to some other room through an inconspicuous but guarded doorway in the far part club. It was this portal that Kitara Twinetall, a 5-meter-high beautiful representative of the firbolg race, has been secretly watching for the past few hours, wearing a scarlet evening dress (made by a craftsman from barge flooring) and heels (size 67) on the occasion of the event.
Now Kitara was sitting on sofas not far from the gaming tables, imposingly crossing her legs, and leisurely sipping wine from a crystal flower vase that had previously stood on the coffee table in front of her. Despite the frank attractiveness of the giantess, awarded with many admiring glances that evening, no one dared to keep her company. "So much effort for nothing," Kitara mentally sighed, but continued to watch, smiling gallantly at the passing guests.
The attention of the giantess was attracted by another visitor to the secret room. The guest's face was hidden by a deep hood, but expensive crimson-black robes, pretentious gestures, not to mention a retinue of half-orc guards, betrayed in him the Treasurer . The character was known for his intrigues, and was also the current head of the River Orc crime house, whose lair was located in the northwestern region of the city, popularly called Cordorc . Kitara chuckled to herself in approval. According to the office's intelligence, the infamous half-orc was supposed to be in Guldorand, but Kitara's instincts did not fail when she insisted that the operation not begin until the Treasurer arrived.
Watching the gentlemen disappear into the opening, Kitara glanced at one of the players at the gaming tables nearby; the man sideways caught the eye of the beauty and nodded smoothly in response, moving on to the exchange of exit formalities with those sitting at the table. Having finished, he tossed some of the chips from his bouncy slide of winnings to a few players who were apparently less fortunate than he was. Then the man stood up.
A handsome young man appeared before Kitara, dressed in black expensive pants and polished fashionable shoes. The shirt, however, was missing, revealing to the world an untanned, muscular torso. Kitara covered her eyes with a hand "Oh Gods, not again!" Meanwhile, a two-meter figure approached Kitara's observation post and asked:
"What is such a luxurious lady doing alone on such a fine evening?" he clarified, smiling broadly and kissing the right hand of the beauty.
In response, Kitara only strictly tilted her head to the right, keeping her eyes on him, suggesting that he sit down. Wasting no time on other sentimentality, the man took a seat to the right of Kitara. She, in turn, tossed aside a strand of her long earthy green hair and leaned towards him to make up for the difference in height.
"Hald, why aren't you wearing a shirt?" she asked coldly, looking at him.
"Kitara, gambling sometimes puts people in an interesting position," Hald remarked melancholy, still smiling.
"No doubt, but you won!" she parried.
Hald looked away from her, slowly looking around at the people dancing around. He sighed serenely, then said, "Our job is to enjoy the process, Kitara. Otherwise, what's the point of it all?"
He turned back to face Kitara, but saw a shadow of incomprehension on her face. "If it is Lathander's will, you will soon see and understand everything for yourself," he explained good-naturedly. "What's the situation?" he then asked Kitara, whose expression had taken on a more condescending look.
"The Treasurer has arrived. Everyone is here," she whispered to Hald enthusiastically, pointing with her eyes at the cherished door at the end of the hall.
"Your insight is truly impressive, dear Kitara," sincerely appreciated Hald. Then he slowly turned his gaze to the doorway. "So it's time for us to act. Remember the plan?" Hald inquired, to which Kitara smiled and playfully waved her hand at him.
"They don't stand a chance!"
A few minutes later, the couple was already walking through the hall towards the goal of their mission. The ceilings in the room were high, so that Kitara could move freely at full height, provided that she dodged the hot wax falling from the chandeliers hung here and there in time.
The two city guards who were on duty at the door visibly tensed up and mechanically double-checked for the presence of gonnes hanging in a sling on their chest. However, there was nothing unusual in the behavior of the guards: anyone would be nervous to see the colossal figures approaching, who were obviously not on the invitation lists, but who, by their entire behavior, showed that official invitations were what other people needed.
"And you call it easy money ?" the guard standing to the right of the door whispered irritably to his comrade. "This is even worse than the time you offered to get a job with that crazy Emperor!" he did not let up. "Look, they are coming right here!"
Unable to withstand the tension, he gave a desperate alarm signal with the heel of his boot at the door. At the very least, he hoped the signal would be taken as an alarm and not as an urgent order for more fried clams for the guests, which would not have surprised the guard in the least; the current employer seemed to him somewhat inconsistent.
"Everything will be alright, buddy!" assured his partner, along the way slapping him on the shoulder. "You take a closer look, what a luxurious lady," he gestured towards the approaching Kitara, "there will definitely be something to tell in the tavern when we finish here!"
"Nothing will be alright! I'm telling you, I've seen this guy somewhere before!" he nodded nervously towards Hald. "We must urgently ..." he began his suggestion, but Hald and Kitara had already come too close to make any maneuvers.
"Good evening, gentlemen," Hald greeted, "my name is Chadley, Hald Chadley. And this is my beautiful companion, Kitara Twinetall." Noticing that one of the guards was already clearly about to object, resorting to gunshot arguments, Hald hastened to dispel his doubts in the bud: "Doctor Coincidence is looking forward to our appearance. Kitara, dear, show the gentlemen our pass."
Both guards looked at Kitara incredulously. Kitara smiled politely at them before leaning over her bag. For a brief moment, a pass to anywhere (as it seemed to the men) really flashed before the eyes of the guards. However, Kitara briskly turned her shoulder to them, and in the next second, they both heard a sound that was strikingly similar to the sound of two bodies of heavily armed men being kicked into the oak door. The receding heavy footsteps of Hald and Kitara, running along the corridor behind the former door, echoed.
"It was worth it, Vincent ..." croaked the guard who had previously occupied a vertical position to the left of the door.
"Shut up, Jach!" hissed Vincent, lying beside him in the rubble of the door frame.

"Wildarse"
An Interview with Thomas Castemont Pt. 1
Month 4, Day 19, 177 AR
A: "So, Thomas. Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed today, I know you're a busy man. What made you agree to be interviewed today?"
T: "Hmm. Well.. It's been a hectic few weeks and truthfully, I just enjoyed the prospect of a conversation that wasn't about laws, law enforcement, or some other major crisis that seems to occupy much of my time on this island."
A: "I can imagine that a lot of people see you more as the Justiciar than Thomas Castemont. I can only imagine how tiring it must get having to deal with problem after problem."
T: "It can be yes. I find that often many look to me for answers and to make decisions. I wish to aid but I'm but one man and sometimes I simply cannot."
A: "So what do you do when you are not acting as the Justiciar. Is there any personal hobby or activity that you like to enjoy in your free time?"
T: "I do not have much free time. I dedicate much of the free time I do have to aiding the oppressed. Many on this island know me to be a Chainbreaker.
But when I do not do either of those things, I actually really enjoy forging. It's a long time hobby of mine. I often make greensteel weapons and mithril armor from the Arjale and Mithril I find to sell cheaply to new adventurers to help them gain an edge in their training."
A: "What made you learn smithing? Was it out of personal need for better weapons and armor or something else?"
T: "I learned forging in the Order I served in Cormyr. It was always an interest of mine and I took the opportunity to use their resources and their experience to be trained in it. I find it soothing and relaxing, even with my injury. I also do enjoy reading. Sometimes when I need some alone time, I will go sit in my room and read a book."
A: "Any particular kind of book you enjoy? Is Thomas Castemont secretly a romance enthusiast?"
T: "Heh. Not quite. I actually love history. I've found history on this isle in particular very interesting. There is much that can be learned from past mistakes and past victories."
A: "Is there any particular story that you would like to share to the readers? Maybe a specific tale that sparks your interest or an event we could all learn from?"
T: "Truth be told, I've not read nearly as many history books as I'd like. I simply don't get much time. And I hate to admit it but I actually found the History of Benwick very intriguing. Written by the Undead abomination, Adelyn Belle'rose."
A: "Ah, yes. It was a tragic tale from what I heard. The headquarters of an Order that was overtaken by devils."
T: "Indeed. And still to this day Devils run rampant in their halls. Triadic statues and altars in ruin. It is very saddening."
A: "Speaking of history though, what do you hope to be your legacy one day in the future?"
T: "My legacy? Hm, I truly doubt people will remember when I'm gone. But that right there.. That is the legacy I hope to leave behind."
Thomas gestures to a large pillar of smooth grey granite. At the bottom of the small monument is an image of a pergola wrapped in trumpet vines, progressively moving inward where blooms begin to form among a void of light. At the forefront, the vines at first appear to be wilted and dried against cavernous stalagmites, typical to the Underdark, closing in at either side to be strangled in lichen and fungi. Vague figures start to move inward towards the blooming light, rings of steel scattered across the portrayed cave floor, shattered or broken, as the stone turns to grass the farther the figures move. A list of names occupies the space above the image.
A: "Are those the names of all the slaves you have freed?"
T: "Not just me. This is a collaborative effort. But up there are the names of every single person who we've helped to break free from their bonds. Who we've helped to begin a new life. Who we've helped to regain their free will.
You see, while I was chained my son was also held captive in slavery. I was required to gather two million gold for his freedom and have him sent back to Cormyr. Someone helped me a great deal with that and all they asked in return was that I would write a book. A book that would inspire other slaves to take the journey and find the courage and hope to break free of their shackles also.
For what this person did for me, it was the only thing he asked me to do. I had never written a book before, but I agreed. My story is out there already. And most of Andunor knows my name. My name being out there means they know who to contact. And we take it from there."
A: "Who would you consider to be your closest friend or aide? In your victories and defeats, who would you say is someone you have come to rely on greatly?"
T: "Griffy."
A: "Any particular reason why?"
T: "Griffy and I have been through a lot together. We were both chained in Andunor. And he is one of the main reasons I did not lose myself down there. Many seem to believe that every slave down there is willing. That every slave down there choses to be there. And that they chose their actions. They do not. If you do not do what your owners want you to do, you get beaten, lashed and tortured or they will hurt you by torturing the people you've come to care about. They are wicked and vile and they will use whatever means to try and make you conform. Griffy and I connected below. I protected him, but he guided me. Gave me strength and hope. And now, he is my son. I am immensely proud of him and he will always be my example.
People do not understand what slaves have to go through. They have no empathy. Only distrust. I was once forced to fight in the arena there against Griffy and another slave I considered my friend. A firbolg named Ulf. My owner was attacked by a Paladin of the Radiant Heart and she blamed it on me asking for mercy for the Paladin and her friend. As my punishment I was forced to fight against them over a ball. Like a sport. The person who would succeed in taking the ball and defeat the other two opponents would be spared lashes. The other two would receive double."
A: "And what did you do?"
T: "Hm well- Initially I thought I would simply let the other two win somehow. But they knew me too well and said if they caught any of us letting the others win, lashes would be increased. Refusal would have resulted in increased lashes and death. We were accompanied by a very experienced retainer, her First Daughter, and a Gnoll. None of us were fully trained or equipped yet. We stood no chance against them. So we uh.. We complied. I defeated Ulf quickly. But.. I couldn't.. I couldn't hurt Griffy. I tried everything I could to make it look like I was giving it my all. But he beat me and Ulf and I took the lashes. He was spared them.
I know there are loyalists down there. And there is always a risk freeing one of them. There are those who would lie and take advantage. But we cannot give up on all because there are a few bad ones out there. Had that happened, myself, Griffy and others who are now contributing to the Surface Settlements and the defense of this isle, would still be down there. And likely not be the people we are today."
A: "You can never tell one's story from their appearances. I think that not many people know or even understand what you've been through."
T: "I tried to capture it in my book as best I could. Again, I'm no writer so I may not have conveyed it very well. Back then it was all still very raw. Now it's a little easier to talk about. But I am so passionate not only about breaking the shackles, but breaking the shackles of the mind.
You know.. One of the first things former slaves ask me when they first break free is: "What now?" My own journey after I broke free was.. terrifying. I didn't really have any friends aside from Griffy and Alister. I had no job, no purpose. I didn't know this island, the people or how things worked here. And many slaves who break free experience this. Having been told what to do. Not having to make decisions for yourself and suddenly, the world is wide open for you to do whatever you want to do. I try to help them after they break free. With my influence, reputation and relationships as Justiciar I can help them make new friends, help them find a home and a job."

Alter Feith
An Interview with Thomas Castemont Pt. 2
A: "What did you do first when you were free of your collar?"
T: "I went to see Evelynn, Griffy and Alister in Guldorand. And I simply held them. We spent hours just talking and.. I slept in a real bed for the first time in years."
A: "How did it feel sleeping in a real bed for once? Did sleep come to you easier or was it a difficult night?"
T: "Heh. I uh.. Ended up sleeping on the floor the first night. After that I simply wandered between Guldorand and Cordor for weeks. Aimlessly. But I didn't know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to settle. Then one day.. I walked past this house next to the Nomad and I noticed it was for sale. I had some gold left and eagerly went to get it. I bought the home and I settled down in Cordor. Fate brought me here. I met friends like Raewynn and Dermia and eventually I gathered my courage and applied to the Justice Ministry as a Magistrate. They declined my application."
A: "Really? They declined you?"
T: "They did. They declined due to my history as a slave. They did not trust me because of it. But I believe they took pity on me and eventually offered me a clerical job. I think they hoped I'd decline it since I was a Magistrate in Suzail for over a decade. But I didn't decline it and gratefully accepted it. I spent most of my days studying the laws, doing administrative work, writing court transcripts, and writing and pinning public announcements. I was a legal aide for just over a year. And even then they still didn't really ever trust me. I was eventually promoted to Magistrate, I think more out of necessity."
A: "I think many people are grateful that you were. I can't imagine a Cordor without you."
T: "No? Hm. That's kind of you to say. But there are many who could do this job as well as I can. I'm passionate about the law. I believe it serves to protect people and their rights. It makes all of us equal, yes? Except perhaps for the King and Queen themselves. But otherwise, everyone is equal under the law."
A: "Of course. I don't envy your job though, having to justicate the legal complexities."
T: "It's not easy, no. The hardest part actually is to deal with dissatisfaction. I do not apply sentences to be the bad guy. If people simply follow our very common sense laws, I'd not have to fine people or sentence them to become outlawed. And sometimes, no matter what you do, some people will always be upset. They won't think you've done enough, or they believe you're corrupt or unfair. I am quite used to people name calling me and having a general dislike for me. I am quite used to people name calling me and having a general dislike for me. And that is fine. It helps take the heat off of the Guards if I take the blame for things and am seen as the bad guy. It allows them to do their job."
A: "But do you ever have moments where your personal interests and your duty conflicts? Have you ever had to make a sacrifice as a Justiciar?"
T: "Hm. My personal interests and duty rarely conflict. And when they do, I delegate matters to others. I cannot be bought. I treat friends the same way I will treat someone I've never met. This is justice, where everyone is equal. But I am well aware of the power of perception. So, if there is a conflict of interest, I let someone else handle it."
A: "A wise position. It's too easy to want to deal with something yourself and potentially ruin things."
T: "I honestly try to delegate as much as I can. I have very capable and talented people who work for me. I'm truly blessed. But sometimes it's difficult to delegate and there are things that simply cannot be delegated. I'm eager to see each of them grow in their careers here in the Justice Ministry though."
A: "But that's enough about Thomas the Justiciar. Let's focus on Thomas Castemont for a moment. When times are hard and your body is tired, do you have a comfort food you like to enjoy?"
T: "Oh uh. Well, I'm very fond of Miso's cooking. But I also just like a really good steak. Or whatever Miss Aera shoves in my hands."
A: "Medium rare or well done?"
T: "Rare."
A: "What about drinks? I know you don't imbibe alcohol but do you have a preference in drinks?"
T: "I uh- I'm quite fond of coffee personally. But I also enjoy the occassional tea or uh.. chocolate milk."
A: "And as a busy man, you probably are often worn down dealing with all sorts of matters. Is there a particular routine you like to follow before sleeping?"
T: "Not really before sleeping no. But I do like to have a routine when I wake up. Which is coffee and news. I tend to make the rounds in the barracks and then the public board catching up on everything. If there are no emergencies I will go to other settlements and read the news there too. If however I had a choice? Before bed I'd love to simply unwind, read, have tea.."
A: "Should I start a petition for you to be let off work by nighttime?"
T: "Heh, I've long searched for a second Justiciar truth be told. But most of my people tend to become absent when they become Magistrates. I've never really found someone I trust enough to be Justiciar. Who is as hard working and diligent."
A: "What if you had a Wish? What would you wish for? A second Justiciar?"
T: "No. I'd wish for the end of slavery."
A: "As expected of Thomas Castemont. Well, I think I've got enough material to write more than a few pages. Is there anything you would like to say to the readers before we end the interview?"
T: "Hm. I suppose.. I'd mostly like to say that every Guard, every Justice employee and everyone else in the Government is doing their best to create a city that is safe and hopefully welcoming to most. Sometimes, Guards especially, have to be firm and decisive. Rather than judging them, support them. They have the hardest job of anyone in this city and are often under scrutiny. But they do the best they can with what tools they are given. I'd ask simply not to make their jobs harder and to show them some kindness and gratitude for the work they do."
A: "And for our closing question. If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?"
T: ".. Patient. Well uh- sometimes."
A: "Ha, well that's four words but I'll let that slide. Thank you for agreeing to the interview and I'm certain our readers are grateful as well."
T: "Thank you, it was fun."
