The Abyss in the Forgotten Realms is a churning, infinite expanse of chaos and malevolence, the most infamous of the Lower Planes. Unlike the structured cruelty of the Nine Hells, the Abyss is raw entropy given form, a place where the very laws of reality are unstable, and each layer reflects the warped will of whatever demon lord or prince rules it. Its infinite layers range from endless battlefields soaked in blood, to desolate wastelands of rot and ash, to bizarre, alien realms where reason itself unravels. The Abyss seethes with hatred and hunger, spawning uncountable demons whose sole purpose is destruction and corruption. To mortals, it embodies not only evil, but madness itself. A plane that cannot be truly mapped or understood, for its nature shifts as violently and unpredictably as the fiends that call it home.
