Next, a compass reading is taken to determine one's parting direction. The cartographer will then travel in that direction until they reach another landmark, whereupon they will take a second compass reading to see how their direction shifted.<br />

Each designation will consist of the marker number, and the compass bearing. i.e., 02E -> 09N. This designation records that the cartographer has left marker 02 in an eastward direction, and has ended up approaching marker 09 from the north.<br />
