The fire crackled low in the ruined temple, shadows dancing along the stone walls. Moonlight filtered through shattered glass, catching the golden strands of Eliryn's hair as she sat, still fuming, by the hearth.

She didn't hear him until he was behind her.

"You've been avoiding me," Vaeril said, his voice a silky thread in the silence.

She didn?t look at him. "I've been protecting my sanity."

He crouched beside her, one hand braced near her thigh. "Is that what you call it now? Sanity?" His breath ghosted against her ear. "Because all I can smell is want."

She turned, sharp and sudden?and he was there, too close again, all shadow and sin. His fingers brushed her jaw, light as a secret. Her breath caught.

"You think you're irresistible," she whispered, heart hammering.

"No," he murmured, leaning in until their noses touched. "I know I am. But you're the one trembling."

She was. Damn him. Her pulse fluttered under his touch like a caught bird.

"You're a monster."

"And yet here you are. Sitting still."

He kissed her.

Not gentle. Not careful.

A clash of power and need?his mouth taking, hers giving only to bite back. Hands tangled in fabric and hair, armor shifted aside with impatient fingers. She shoved him down, and he let her, laughing low in his throat as her body straddled his.

"I'm still angry," she gasped against his neck.

"Good," he groaned, hands gripping her hips. "Angry makes you honest."

Her blouse slipped down her shoulder, and he kissed the exposed skin, lips trailing fire. Her fingers fumbled with the clasps of his armor, desperate and determined.

"Underdark boys are too smug."

"Highborn girls are too slow."

She tugged his tunic off with a growl. "Then shut up and show me what's so gods-damned irresistible."

He did.

And for a while, there was no war. No surface. No shadows. Just tangled silk and sun-kissed skin and the unholy sound of enemies forgetting how to be anything but together.
